An attempt by Kiev forces to attack the Crimean Peninsula using American-made MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles was foiled by Russian air defenses early on May 4, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In a brief statement, the ministry said that four ATACMS missiles were intercepted over Crimea. It didn’t clarify what air defense systems were used to shoot down the missiles.
The Russian military operates several air defense systems with anti-ballistic missile capabilities. The most advanced of these systems are the S-300V4 and S-400. The S-500 is even more capable against ballistic missiles. However, deliveries of the systems have just begun and it is not known to be deployed in Crimea.
The ATACMS is a tactical ballistic missile that can be fired from the tracked M270 MLRS and the wheeled M142 HIMARS systems, both are already in service with Kiev forces.
Kiev forces first deployed the ATACMS in October of 2023, a year and eight months after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. At the time, Ukraine received a limited number of ATACMS missiles from the United States. However, the missiles were of the older M39 Block I version, which has a range of 165 kilometers. This version is armed with a cluster warhead with 950 M74 bomblets. This batch was quickly used within a few weeks.
Last month, Kiev forces resumed attacks with ATACMS missiles after receiving around a 100 units in secret from the U.S. These missiles were however of a newer version with a longer-range.
It is still unclear what version was the version supplied to Ukraine. The U.S. might have supplied the M39A1 Block I which is armed with a cluster warhead with 300 M74 bomblets but has a range of 300 kilometers, or with the M48 QRU and M57 Block IA Unitary versions which are both armed with WAU-23/B unitary warheads and have a range of 270 and 300 kilometers respectively.
While the initial Ukrainian ATACMS attacks caused some damage, the more recent ones were way less successful. This indicates that the Russian military has begun to adapt to the new threat.
The Kiev regime apparently understands this. Earlier this week, Ivan Stupak, an adviser to the Ukrainian parliament’s national security, defense and intelligence committee, said that Kiev forces have only up to two months before the Russian military adapts to ATACMS.
