At least 22 Ukrainian suicide drones were shot down over Russian territory overnight, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In two separate statements released late on April 27, the ministry said that five drones were intercepted over the region of Bryansk. The ministry announced in a third statement released on April 28 morning that nine more drones were shot down over Bryansk, three over the Kursk region, two more over the Belgorod region and three over the Kaluga region.
Kaluga governor Vladislav Shapsha said that the drones that targeted the regions were shot down close to the Lyudinovo oil depot.
“Tonight at 3:40 a.m. local time [0:40 a.m. GMT] three drones were downed in the area of the oil depot of the town of Lyudinovo. There are no casualties and no destruction. Operational services are working on the spot,” the governor wrote on his Telegram channel.
There were no reports of casualties in any of the other targeted regions. Videos posted to social networks showed interceptions over Bryansk.
Ukraine stepped up attacks on Russian territory with the start of the year, targeting mainly civilian properties and infrastructure, usually using drones either supplied directly by NATO backers or made locally from commercial models and parts.
Early on April 27, Kiev forces launched more than 60 suicide drones at the Krasnodar region. Most of the drones were shot down. The large-scale attack caused minor damage to two oil refineries and an airfield. No casualties were reported however.
The Russian military has already resumed missile and drone strikes against Ukraine in response. Much of the country’s military infrastructure and power grid have been hit.
