Russian air defenses have repealed another large-scale Ukrainian attack with suicide drones on five different Russian regions.
The attack began late on February 23. In two separate statements, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that two Ukrainian drones were intercepted over the regions of Belgorod and Bryansk. No casualties or material losses were reported in the two regions.
Early on February 24, the ministry announced in three more statements that four other suicide drones were shot down by air defenses, two over the Tula region, one over Bryansk and another over the region of Kursk. Again, there were no losses whatsoever.
Four more drones were shot down later in the morning, according to another statement by the ministry. One of the drones was intercepted over Kursk, a second over Tula and the remaining two over the region of Lipetsk.
Three blasts were reported in Lipetsk. Governor Igor Artamonov later said that one of the downed drones fell on the large Novolipetsk Steel plant, causing a fire. There were no reports of casualties, however.
The large-scale drone attack came on the second anniversary of the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. It also came exactly a week after Kiev forces lost the strategic town of Avdeevka in the Donetsk region to the Russian military.
Ukraine intensified drone attacks on Russian territory after the failure of a counteroffensive last spring. The Kiev regime likely sees these attacks, which mainly target civilian proprieties and infrastructure, as a way to make up for its failures on the battlefields.
The Russian military usually responds to such attacks by launching large-scale missile and drone strikes against high-value targets in Ukraine.
