Late on July 20, Russian air defenses intercepted two unidentified drones which attempted to attack Hmeimim Air Base on the Syrian coast.
“On July 20, 2022, at about 10:10 p.m., Russian air defense systems detected unmanned aerial vehicles approaching the area of the Russian Khmeimim airbase from the northeast,” RIA Novosti quoted Russian sources as saying.
The source said that drones were shot down two kilometers away from the base. The failed attack didn’t result in any casualties or material losses.
Russian media suggested the drones were “makeshift” and didn’t pose a real threat. They were likely launched from the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, which is occupied by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and several Turkish-backed factions.
Hmeimim Air Base, the headquarters of Russian forces in Syria, is protected by a multi-layered air defense network. Several S-400, Pantsir-S and Tor air-defense systems are known to be deployed at the strategic base.
HTS manufactures and operates several types of makeshift drones. The terrorist group launched drones at Hmeimim Air Base on several occasions in the past. Almost all previous attacks were a complete failure. The July 20 attack was the first such attack in a long while.
The failed drone attack on Hmeimim Air Base will not likely go unpunished. The Russian military is already working to prevent militants in Syria from developing drones. A series of Russian airstrikes that hit Greater Idlib on July 12 destroyed an underground drone workshop that was reportedly being operated by HTS.

What I don’t understand about their strategy is why setting up long lived conflicts. In Syria the political situation is overcomplicated, but in Ukraine is not. Yet they are using the same playbook.
And it is not because they don’t have the military means to kill a Zelensky or two. It is their strategy to create this low level conflicts and maintain them active for long time.
Maybe this is to bleed the murican empire. A multi-front attack ( economic, financial, military, cyber ). It seems to be working, because the western masses are reaching a boiling point very fast.

Pepe Escobar is also very good and wrote about the highly successful Iran, Russia and Turkey summit in Tehran this week. Russian position on Syria is now simpatico with Iran and hardening against the Zionists and Turks. Erdogan is a opportunist and trying to manipulate both the west and Russia, but will fai as Turkish economy is bankrupt with 120% inflation and 40% unemployment.
