Russian air defenses shot down a Soviet-made Su-27 fighter jet of the Ukrainian Air Force (UAF), the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on August 10.
“Air defense systems shot down a Su-27 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force, two guided aerial bombs, two U.S. (United States)—made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and 457 aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles,” the ministry said in its daily briefing.
The ministry didn’t elaborate, but Russian media reported that the fighter jet was shot down over the Zaporizhzhia region. There was no comment from the UAF, which rarely acknowledges its aerial losses.
Around 34 Su-27UB, Su-27S1M and Su-27P1M inherited from the Soviet Union were in active service with the UAF before the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine more than three years ago. Many of these fighter jets were shot down or destroyed on the ground by the Russian military.
Russian S-400 long-range air defense systems and R-37M long-range air-to-air missiles – typically launched from MiG-31, Su-35 or Su-57 fighter jets – were credited with most previous losses. Both systems can reach hypersonic speed, have a range of up to 400 kilometers and are equipped with complex guidance systems, with on-board active radar seekers.
The UAF remains largely ineffective. Western attempts to revive Ukraine’s air power by upgrading its Soviet-era fighter jets with modern weapons or supplying American-made F-16 and French-made Mirage-2000 fighter jets have so far seen very little success.
