A military aircraft was shot down over the town of Yenakiyevo, Gorlovsky district, Donetsk region. The head of the city administration confirmed the incident, calling on the local residents to go out from the streets.
The footage from the area confirmed that the aircraft was shot down, caught fire and fell in the fields near the city. The aircraft was reportedly hit by anti-aircraft missile. The pilots ejected from the aircraft.
Presumably, the downed fighter is a Su-34 of the Russian Air Force. The aircraft was likely hit during a mission sortie when launching missiles at Ukrainian positions from the airspace of the city of Yenakievo. The city is located far from the front lines. It may be supposed that the aircraft was destroyed by friendly fire.

It’s weird indeed. Multiple video angles show a Russian Su-34/Su-30 warplane being shot down in the vicinity of Yenakiieve, a Russian-held area south of Bakhmut. The downing was reportedly the result of friendly fire, but the identification of the specific anti air system used wasn’t provided.

Cause they probably are not able to see the difference between sowjet tech owned by russia and sowjet tech owned by ukraine. That is possibly the reason why ukraine still has air planes and russia does not go all in us style in air raids.
It’s “friend or foe” recon system, just like any other western jet has. Has nothing to do with visuals.

As both sides use the same aircraft, and will have identification signals turned off to further prevent tracking and targeting, what they have to operate with is radar images of an aircraft that at times suddenly appear out of nowhere as they often hug the ground. Imagine you’re operating a SAM site. You suddenly see an aircraft clim out of the blue heading towards your location or friendly forces. With mere seconds to determine friend or foe you shoot. This happens all the time, especially if you cannot differentiate friend and foe.
