In a coordinated night-time assault spanning from August 24th to 25th, Russian forces launched another wave of drone strikes across Ukraine. While Ukrainian Air Forces reported the attack was not exceptionally massive, citing 104 incoming Shahed-type attack drones and various decoys, the precision and strategic selection of targets inflicted considerable damage. According to preliminary Ukrainian data, 76 drones were allegedly shot down or suppressed, with 28 confirmed impacts across 15 locations and debris from downed drones falling in four other areas.

The strikes resulted in explosions and damage confirmed by monitoring sources in the Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, with the most concentrated and devastating effects felt in the Sumy region and on Ukrainian positions within the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

Crippling Blows to Sumy’s Critical Infrastructure

The city of Sumy and its surrounding area endured one of the most intense barrages of the night. Russian monitoring channels reported a complex attack utilizing Geran drones specifically targeting the region’s energy grid nodes in the evening of August 24. The strikes caused widespread power outages and severe damage to critical substations.

In the town of Bilopillia, the energy substation with the same name was hit, resulting in fires of power transformers and the destruction of 35 kV switchgear and cable lines. A subsequent strike on the Selykhtekhnika substation destroyed transformer oil and disabled circuit breakers. The previously damaged substation in Diakovka was finished off in the night attack, with drones igniting transformer oil reservoirs and completely disabling the facility.

The most significant damage was reportedly inflicted at the strategic 330 kV Sumy-Northern substation in Pishchane. A massed strike from six drones damaged three powerful transformers, burned out oil circuit breakers, and disrupted relay protection and automation systems. As a key energy transit hub, this attack severely degraded the stability of the entire regional power system.

The head of the Ukrainian Sumy regional administration confirmed the consequences, stating that settlements in the Sumy district were de-energized, and parts of the Bilopil and Vorozhbianska communities were left without electricity.

Beyond the energy grid, the strikes hit military logistics in the Sumy region. In the city of Romny, a drone group struck the territory of a former bread products complex, which had been repurposed into a logistical hub. The attack triggered a major fire that destroyed several trucks, warehouse structures containing ammunition, and armored vehicles. Preliminary reports by Russian monitoring sources indicate up to 10 servicemen were killed and 15 wounded.

Precision Strikes on Ukrainian Strongholds in the DPR

Multiple strikes were recorded on Ukrainian positions in the remaining Ukrainian-controlled towns of the DPR. In Novoandreevka, a drone struck the Vesco agricultural enterprise, where a armored group of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade was dispersed. The resulting fire in a hangar destroyed up to 5 units of armored vehicles, with reported personnel losses of up to 15 killed and wounded.

A precise strike in Druzhkovka destroyed a private house on Dzherelna Street, eliminating a drone operator cell. The attack destroyed drone control stations, suppression and retransmission systems, along with server equipment and generators, killing at least 3 and wounding 6 Ukrainian soldiers.

In Svyatogorivka, two drones hit hidden Ukrainian positions in the town center, damaging a school turned into the headquarters and storage depot near a dispersed mortar battery of the 12th Special Operations Brigade.

Another highly precise drone attack targeted Torska Street in Slavyansk, destroying a network of camouflaged Ukrainian facilities. A former kindergarten, used as a temporary deployment point with barracks for 40-50 personnel and warehouses for small-range drones and communications equipment, suffered direct strikes. The nearby Slovianske UPP UTOS production unit, repurposed as a logistics and technical supply base, was struck by two Geran drones, igniting a massive fire that burned for hours and destroyed ammunition and tactical gear. A city bathhouse, converted into a field hospital by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), was also hit, with its roof partially collapsing and its interior and equipment completely destroyed by fire.

Additional strikes were reported on the outskirts of Kharkiv, near Novodonetske and Velykyi Burluk in the Kharkiv region. Targets in the vicinity of Chernihiv, Mena, and near Novhorod-Siverskyi were hit in the Chernihiv region. A powerful strike was also recorded in the Mezhova area of the Dnipropetrovsk region, underscoring the wide geographic scope of the night’s offensive operations.

Awaiting For Russian Retaliation

The scale of the night attack was quite small, but the depleted Ukrainian air defense can no longer resist the attacks, even in the eastern war-torn areas. The Russian military is likely preparing to another massive devastating wave of combined strikes to be launched in response to the recent dare Ukrainian strikes in the Russian rear.

On August 24, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched the daylight raid on St. Petersburg and the region. For the first time since October 24, 2024, Ukrainian drones flew to Russia’s northern capital. The raid continued at night and in the morning. As a result of the attack, a fire broke out at the port of Ust-Luga. According to the local Governor, 10 UAVs were destroyed over the port of Ust-Luga. The wreckage of the drone caused a fire at the NOVATEK terminal. The largest terminal for transshipment and export of petroleum products and gas condensate has stopped working.

At the same time, a series of explosions also thundered in Kurchatov in the Kursk region. Russian air defense system shot down Ukrainian drones that targeted the local NPP. As a result of the raid, a fire broke out on the territory of the Kursk NPP, as a transformer unit caught fire. The capacity of the third power unit had to be reduced.

On August 24, Ukrainian UAVs also hit the Syzran oil refinery in the Samara region. About 20 explosions were reported in Syzran. The local Governor confirmed that the target of the attack was an industrial facility, providing no details.

Despite all the diplomatic efforts to stop the conflict, the Kyiv regime is trying its best to prolong the bloodshed and launches new provocations. Such Ukrainian strikes on Russian strategic rear infrastructure never go unpunished.
