Russian Airstrikes Hit ISIS Cells In Eastern Homs After Deadly Attack On Syrian Troops

On July 23, ISIS terrorists attacked a checkpoint of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern countryside of Homs.

The terrorists targeted the checkpoint with machine guns, killing two soldiers of and wounding at least three others. At around the same time, other cells of ISIS were reportedly targeting positions of the SAA in al-Sukhnah and in the nearby al-Amour mount.

The attack provoked a fierce response from the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS), whose warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on ISIS cells and their hideouts in eastern Homs countryside on July 23 and 24. The results of the Russian airstrikes are yet to be revealed.

This was ISIS deadliest attack in July. Last month, the group’s terrorists killed 14 service members of the SAA and civilians in a single ambush in the southern Raqqa countryside. The SAA and the VKS responded with a joint operation that claimed the lives of at least 20 terrorists, including those responsible for the ambush. Since then, ISIS cells have been inactive in the southern Raqqa countryside.

The new attack confirms that ISIS has not giving up yet on its insurgency in central Syria. The terrorist group’s cells are still trying to expand their influence in the region.

Syria and Russia believe that ISIS cells in the central region are not only receiving support from areas held by the US-led coalition in the northeastern and southeastern regions, but also being trained there.
