On February 29, two waves of Russian airstrikes hit training camps and other positions of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and one of its closest allies in northern Syria.
The first wave of airstrikes hit in the morning the western outskirts of Idlib city, the heart of the so-called Greater Idlib region that is directly ruled by HTS.
Syrian opposition media claimed that the airstrikes targeted a furniture workshop. However, video footage released later by pro-government media confirmed that the target was a training camp where militants of the terrorist group were gathered. One militant was killed and at least four others were wounded as a result of the airstrikes.
Later in the afternoon, another wave of airstrikes targeted a training camp and other positions of the so-called Eastern Sector, a rogue formation of the Ahrar al-Sham Movement that is closely allied with HTS, in the outskirts of the city of al-Bab as well as in the nearby towns of Jabal al-Dayr and Qabasin in the Turkish-occupied part of the northern Aleppo countryside.
The pinpoint airstrikes claimed the life of a field commander of the Eastern Sector and left at least four other militants wounded.
The Russian Aerospace Forces targets HTS positions in Greater Idlib on a regular basis, but it rarely launches airstrikes against areas in northern Syria occupied by Turkey. This was the first time both regions were hit by Russian airstrikes this year.
The latest airstrikes came as HTS is facing an uprising in Greater Idlib over a series of abuses and crimes by its security forces. Turkey has been also pressuring the terrorist group to withdraw its allies, namely the Eastern Sector, from Turkish-occupied areas in the northern Aleppo countryside.
It’s worth noting that HTS and its allies stepped up attacks from Greater Idlib on nearby government-held areas in recent months in violation of a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago.
Turkey maintains a large military presence in Greater Idlib, allegedly to enforce the ceasefire agreement. However, it has so far done nothing to achieve this.
