On December 20, a series of Russian airstrikes hit terrorists’ positions and fortifications in the northern countryside of Lattakia.
The airstrikes targeted the hills surrounding the town of Kabani, a stronghold for several terrorist groups. Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, the Turkistan Islamic Party and Ajnad al-Kavkaz occupy positions in the town and its outskirts.
Over the last few years, the terrorists launched multiple rocket and drone attacks from Kabani at a number of civilian and military targets on the Syrian coast, including Russia’s Hmeimim Air Base.

The Russian airstrikes were likely a response to the terrorists’ repeated violations of the ceasefire in the Greater Idlib region [which includes northern Lattakia].
A day earlier, the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria announced that militants recently launched 38 attacks from Greater Idlib. At least six attacks took place in the northern Lattakia countryside.
These violations are threatening the Russian-Turkish agreement on Greater Idlib that was reached on March 5 after a heated battle between government forces and the militants with their main backer, Turkey.
The agreement, which is meant to stabilize Greater Idlib, is not holding very well. A serious military confrontation will likely erupt in the region, if the agreement collapses.
