On July 22, a series of airstrikes which were reportedly carried out by warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces hit the towns of Jdayde and Yacubiyeh in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
Jdayde and Yacubiyeh, which are located in the western countryside of Idlib, are currently occupied by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. The terrorist group displaced the local Christian population of the two towns when it occupied them in 2015. Since then, the group has established a network of headquarters, training camps and ammunition depots there.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the airstrikes claimed the lives of five people and wounded several others. The casualties were not natives of Jdayde and Yacubiyeh. Three of them were men, likely militants of HTS.
The airstrikes may have been a response to the July 20 failed drone attack on Russia’s Hmeimim Air Base on the Syrian coast. The two drones which were intercepted while attempting to attack the base were reportedly launched by HTS from Greater Idlib.
It is also possible that the airstrikes were meant as a direct threat to HTS leader Abu Mohamad al-Julani, who paid a visit to Jdayde, Yacubiyeh and the nearby town of al-Qania just a few days earlier.
Overall, the situation in Greater Idlib remains unstable. The ceasefire agreement on the region, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago, is being challenged by HTS and its Turkish-backed allies on a daily basis. Moreover, the terrorist group is taking advantage of the ceasefire to develop its military capabilities and expand its influence beyond Greater Idlib. This situation will not likely change any time soon.
