The US will leave when the Kurdistan project fails to achieve enough results to justify the ongoing cost.
The project itself is precarious, and hinges on two crossings over the Tigris into Iraqi Kurdistan upon which all of the economic viability of the US occupied zone in Syria depends upon.
There are many other vulnerabilities undergirding the project itself, of course- namely the actual inhabitants of that area, as well as the political will of the US to continue a very unpopular occupation there.
Additionally, the project can be seen as a bargaining chip. I dont think the USA is married to the Kurdistan project, so to speak.

No need to start WW3, just kill a few US troops with sniper fire or roadside bombs and they’ll go home. The Syria deployment is unpopular with the public, who were perfectly content to see US troops pulled out back in Oct 2019 when the deep state made Trump backtrack.
The public would’ve been happy to leave Syria then, and they’ll be happy to do so now. They just need a little incentive. A few dead American troops will do the trick. Seriously, it would take only the slightest nudge to get the US out of there.
