Russian Army Advances In Zaporizhzhia As It Repels More Ukrainian Counterattacks (Videos)

On February 24, the Russian military advanced to the west of the Haichur River in Zaporizhzhia, all while repelling more counterattacks by Kiev forces.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced in its daily briefing that the Vostok [East] Group of Forces had captured Rizdvyanka, which is located some eight kilometers from the Haichur. The capture of the settlement put Russian troops close to the T-0408 highway, which links the city of Orikhiv, a defensive node of Kiev forces, with Novomykolaivka, a key logistics center.

This major Russian push came as Kiev forces continued to launch counterattacks further to the north to the east of the river.

Two counterattacks by the 82nd Guards Rifle Division were repelled close to Hai by the Vostok Group of Forces. Two assault groups from the division attempted to advance towards the settlement on two armored personnel carriers and two pickup trucks. They were, however, detected and targeted before making any gains.

The Vostok Group of Forces also struck gatherings of Kiev forces near Velikomikhailovka, Gavrilovka, Kolomiytsy, Egorovka, and Novoselka.

According to the Russian MoD, Ukrainian losses in Zaporizhzhia amounted to “170 troops, four armored personnel carriers, and 18 motor vehicles” over the past 24 hours.

Ukraine began launching counterattacks close to Haichur earlier in the month, but in recent days it became clear that its troops have begun to lose momentum. Kiev forces suffered heavy losses, and failed to capture any key settlement from the Vostok Group of Forces.

Now, it appears that Kiev forces are no longer capable of conducting more counterattacks, and Russian troops are once again advancing.

Ukraine could still send additional reinforcements to Zaporizhzhia to keep pressure on the Vostok Group of Forces near the river. However, such a move is guaranteed to weaken Ukrainian defenses in other directions, even within the same region.
