The Russian military has captured an American-made M1A1 SA Abrams main battle tank of Kiev forces in the Donetsk direction.
The tank was damaged and abandoned near the settlement of Ivanovka, right to the south of the settlement of Pokrovsk, before being captured by Russian troops.
Despite being damaged, the tank, which was upgraded in Ukraine with a cage armor and explosive reactive armor blocks, appeared to be in a salvageable condition.
Ukraine received 31 Abrams from the United States over the past year. The total cost of the Abrams can vary, and can be over $10 million per a single tank when including training and sustainment. Around two thirds of the tanks have reportedly been destroyed, damaged or captured.
Ukraine withdrew all Abrams tanks from the front earlier this year as the result of the excessive use of drones by the Russian military, which made it too difficult for the tanks to operate without detection or coming under attack, according to The Associated Press.
However, the rapid advance of the Russian military from Avdeevka towards Pokrovsk forced Kiev forces to redeploy the tanks.
A report released by CNN earlier this year acknowledged that the tank performed poorly in Ukraine and revealed that Kiev forces have been struggling just to keep their remaining Abrams operational.

the russians are mobilizing thousands of rad hardened t64 tanks from the coldwar days, they can take an emp licken and keep on ticken. move 5 brigades to belarus, to charge in and secure a land route to kaliningrad, and 25 brigades to flatten ukraine after multiple emp attacks on nato facilities and airfields. there will be very few working ‘fpv drones’ to worry about after that. russia has the tankers for the gear, nato doesn’t. strategic game changer coming real, soon…
they would need 25-30 brigades before they could even think of going on an offensive like that.
