Russian Army Captured Two French CAESAR Howitzers From Kiev Forces

The Russian military has captured two French-made CAESAR self-propelled howitzers from Kiev forces, French lawyer and politician Regis de Castelnau revealed on June 22.

On Twitter, Regis said that the Russian military had moved the howitzers to Uralvagonzavod plant in Nizhny Tagil, which develops and produces battle tanks, armored vehicles and howitzers. According to Regis, the howitzers will be studied and possibly reverse engineered at the plant.

On June 23, what is said to be the official Telegram channel of Uralvagonzavod confirmed Regis claims. The channel thanked France and President Emmanuel Macron for the howitzers, saying that they will be “handy”.

These claims have not been denied by the defense ministries of Ukraine and France, so far. However, Russian sources are yet to share any photos of the captured CAESAR howitzers.

Manufactured by the partly state-owned arms maker Nexter Systems, the CAESAR is a 155mm 52-caliber howitzer mounted on a six-wheeled truck chassis. The howitzer can fire up to six rounds per minute and has a firing range of around 42 kilometers using ERFB [extended range, full bore] shells, and up to 55 kilometers using rocket assisted shells.

France has supplied at least 18 CAESAR howitzers to Kiev forces since the beginning of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.

Unlike many other Western-made howitzers which were recently supplied to Kiev forces, the CAESAR arrived complete with its communication and fire control systems. Russian specialists may be taking a close look at these valuable systems right now.

France, like the rest of Kiev’s Western allies, hopes that its military support will prolong the war in Ukraine and weaken Russia. This policy has only destabilized Europe, so far.

No need to reverse engineer nonsense. These weapons do not add value to Russia’s technical know-how.

The whole “reverse engineering” part was only meant as a slap in the face of tje French and a message to everyone else.

They are basically mocking them…of course they do not need to reverse engineer anything, but finding out how this system is wired, along with it’s capabilities and vulnerabilities will give the Russian side a valuable insight into how to best defeat it with the least effort.

Of course the French will not be too happy about this…which is the whole point herem

ist always good to study it anyway.

Z FOR VICTORY

Precisely..the French would do exactly the same if they had been given a chance.

Knowing EXACTLY how the enemies equipment works and how it is calibrated can save a lot of money…not only in with regards of being able to better understand it and therefore defeat it, but it could also provide you with another alternative engineering solution(s) which someone had alrrady paid for (in this case the French), free of charge.

China is the best at this. They have infiltrated every American institution and they get free research and development data.

Rightiswrong

This gun is a big seller for France on the international market. Russia can now offer it for sale at cheaper prices, lowering the value of the French product. French tech, at Russian prices. That will be a big seller in Africa.

More slaps in the face for France.

Ed Theman

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Russia can now make these types of weapons and this will give them a big head start seeing how the French made it.

There are so many engineering aspects to look at to make a reliable product. So many things can go wrong when you fire these weapons. Russia can see where extra support was needed, or recoil dampers may be needed etc.

Z FOR VICTORY

The laws of physics are not a subject to politics and regardless of which country is trying to develop a certain product, in some specific areas they will step on the same rakes as the engineering teams before them.

This is why being able to capture enemy equipment is pure gold. Russia will soon get the opportunity to examine all kinds of western weapons, as the Ukro-Nazis will be fleeing their positions with increasing frequency, along with their western “military consultants”..

kogda mi byli na voinye

france is not our gouvernment, never forget…

JayLindberg

How do you think the Russians got those weapons in Ukraine? They are not front line weapons. They had to buy them on the Ukrainian black market or stole them, truck and all

Johan P

Or capture them. Dont forget a lot of Ukrainian units are completely surrounded, or almost so. The frontline is not a straight line on a map. Especially of these were part of a battery (typically 6 pieces) where some were destroyed and a good part of the crew dead or wounded the remaining crew may have fled/retreated, maybe straight through fields or woods. Maybe the trucks they are mounted on were damaged enough not to be able to drive anymore. Maybe they were left because they were out of gas (or ammo). It is not really unlikely considering the the many area’s where ‘kettles’ are formed for russian forces to come across an artillery unit. There just are too many possibilities so we will have to wait until the russian forces give more details about how they were captured.

JayLindberg

The French gave them 20 units. Their range is close to 40 km. The front isn’t moving that fast. They are self mobile. THEIR ON A TRUCK. These systems shouldn’t have been anywhere close to the front.

JerryDrakeJr

Cut it to 20-25 kilometers … for practical reasons, precision, speed of reaction… and these howitzers are not independent units under the direct command of the strategic command, but are part of tactical combat groups and are within their combat setup on the field.

Rightiswrong

Russia and her allies have captured thousands of missile systems, tanks, SPGs, MLRSs, large calibre guns, etc since day one. Russia herself lost vehicles and armaments to the Ukrainians, though obviously not in comparable terms. They do this by encircling areas of troops, not individual units. Would you be prepared to drive a Caesar out of a combat zone you just found out had been encircled? Caesars are sent to fire their rounds, leave to their resupply areas, and enter into the firing areas again. It’s not hard to see how units can get cut off, when their firing and resupply lines keep moving every day without their real time knowledge. Do you think the Russians won’t notice you, or do you think the Renault engine can outrun artillery shells or rockets?

Torquemada

Quizá forma de contrarrestarlos.

Антон

There were several projects of self-propelled mortars and howitzers on wheeled chassis, may be some technologies of “Caesar” would help to improve them. These particular “Caesars” (18 units in total) were produced for army of Marocco, it means reducing of capabilities in comparison with original howitzer for french army.

I agree. 2S35 Koalitsiya is already superior to anything that NATO has. It has a range of 80 km and can fire a round every 5 seconds.

Abraham Lincoln

Wrong they may be able to be jammed by Russian counter measures. So they are very valuable to examine for this reason

Z FOR VICTORY

And that is exactly the point…being able to “turn off” the enemy equipment is a big bonus…especially when they least expect it.

I’m pretty sure everyone still remembers how the French turned off the Iraqi anti aircraft defence systems, which Iraq had bought from them during the American invasion under the false pretext of WMD’s.

Vlad the Imposter

Sure they will. They come complete with NATO compatible fire control computer and likely data links to satellites and radar. They can at the very least learn how to jam the data links or better yet hack them and download a virus that renders them useless. There’s always something to learn taking shit apart.

NATO's PROXYTUTE

RF forces should exert all its effort to seize those Western supplied weapons intact for donation to Donetsk and Lugansk MILITARY, shouldn’t be that hard if AFU are offered some monetary incentives as well as new employment contracts under RF military. a win win situation.

kymsheba

i agree BUT it is always a good idea to study and examine an opponents weapons to at least know weaknesses or strengths of such equipment. = Z =

Nice museum pieces.. Rheinmetall 8.8cm design gun carriage frame, updated, first featured in the 4th version of that AA gun size 1943-44.. and don’t knock French designs.. they typically have merit.

2 captured, 10 destroyed and the rest being sold in the black market for terrorists?

It looks like it can carry 40 rounds of 155mm ammo, seems like it needs a lot of logistic support to remain lethal.

Russian military industery is dead with no western spare parts.

Hahaha The JewSA has only 1 more spare set of spare rocket motors for their Antares rockets that service and supply the ISS. Then they will have to beg Russia to sell them more! P.S. You are a moronic low quality troll

typical russian whataboutism and no arguments, just BS. Why many factory’s in russia are suspended ? coincidence? i dont think so. Russia is doomed with no western technology. Oil,gas and military industry will suffer badly

Guys, I’m not sure it’s a good idea to delete messages (pronounced as heavy moderation). I mean it got outta hand but this place becomes kinda boring without the Jens and the USA#1s of this world.

Agreed. I started, most of the time, to skip the postings of the two whom you were referring to above, but I vote for letting them stay to spew their gibbirish without “heavy moderation”.

Антон

There is another trouble: some other readers’ (not troll-bots) messages are deleted. I’m not against deleting Hans, “prophet” and so on, but others shouldn’t suffer. Even such id… “ideal people” as Jensy helps to raise popularity of any place, though i also skipping their “analytics”, but other people have fun arguing with them. Read their messages few times and you will hate them and all they say, i.e. news from western MSM and propagandist cliches. They are useful idiots, oh, “ideal people”.

In use complaints were made about the low level of armoured protection for the crew -susceptible to IED,s /roadside bombs/mines and shells landing as close as 5 metres away -Ukraine has been given the old MK 1 version – in other words about zero protection if attacked.

Ukraine is losing bad. Russia already captured more than 8000 afu soldiers, at the same time Ukraine only captured 300 Russian soldiers. That’s a 26X advantage to the Russians right there.

Like somebody already posted here, and I agree, leave all captured weapons with the LPR and DPR armies, but from those few which are worth copying (many are old junk that are decades behind Russia and China tech level) , ship an exemplar to China as well.

I wonder if the CAESAR system can be hacked? That would be a scream, just fiddle with the computational computer and redirect the fire control system to new coordinates. LOL, dumb Frogs!

It would be interesting to know WHY and WHERE they were captured, since their very long range and therefore, the capability to fire well inside their lines.
