The Russian military have destroyed what appears to be a Swedish state-of-the-art Giraffe 1X short-range radar in Ukraine with a first-person view (FPV) suicide drone.
Footage showing the destruction of the radar first appeared online on August 25. It is unclear in which direction of the special military operation zone the radar was targeted.
The Giraffe 1X is a small and lightweight yet high-performing 3D radar with an active electronically scanned array and a report range of 75 kilometers.
The developer, Saab AB, describes the radar on its website as “an ideal air surveillance component in the Ground Based Air Defense (GBAD) domain that provides ground based air defense commanders with engagement quality target data, drone detection and Counter-Artillery, Rocket and Mortar (C-RAM) sense and warn within a single solution.”
“It is the ideal main sensor for a Very Short Range Radar (VSHORAD) system and can be used as a gap filler that complements larger GBAD systems, or as a Counter-UAS (C-UAS) solution,” the Swedish defense giant adds.
The radar is highly-mobile and easy to deploy. It can be transported on a pickup truck-sized vehicle, by helicopter or towed on a trailer. It can be also permanently installed on a building or a mast, or integrated into a suitable vehicle. In addition, the system can be operated remotely or locally.
The radar destroyed in Ukraine appeared to be mounted on a trailer. Notably, it was operational when it was struck by the FPV suicide drone.
There are no reports explicitly stating that Ukraine received Giraffe 1X radars from Sweden. However, the radar typically operates with the RBS 70 man-portable air-defense system, also developed by Saab AB, which had been spotted with Kiev forces. The two made up together the RBS 70 MSHORAD system.
The cost of the Giraffe 1X is unknown, but a Swedish military contract for the naval version of the radar with associated components from 2024 was valued at 700 million Swedish kronor (around $68 million). The ground-based version is likely much cheaper, but still way far more than the coast of an FPV suicide drone, which is typically under $1,000.
