The Russian military’s Yug [South] Group of Forces has developed a unique laser mine-clearing system based on the Courier ground drone platform.
The Courier platform, which first appeared last year, represents a significant advancement in unmanned military technology, with the ability to be modified for different roles, from armed combat, to mine-laying, engineering, electronic warfare and even one-way attacks.
The platform’s operational endurance ranges from 12 to 72 hours, and it can be controlled remotely within a range of 3 to 10 kilometers, depending on the operational environment and the need for stealth or direct control.
The modification tested by the Yug Group of Forces utilizes a laser system to remotely remove mines planted over the surface.
The laser is powerful just enough to set the mines on fire from a distance of up to 150 meters within a few seconds, without triggering their explosive charge. Test footage shows the drone neutralizing several types of mines in this way without causing any major explosion. An integrated electro-optical system was used for aiming the laser.
One important use for the Courier-based laser mine-clearing system will be to remove a mine barrier blocking a key road without causing any damage to the road itself.
While the system is currently still benign tested, it will likely end up entering serial production in the near future. The system will offer a much needed capability not just for the Russian military, but also for the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
