Russian Army Gets More Upgraded TOS-1A Thermobaric Rocket Launchers (Videos)

Uralvagonzavod, a part of the Russian state-owned Rostec defense conglomerate, has delivered a batch of upgraded TOS-1A “Solntsepyok” thermobaric rocket systems to the Russian military.

The delivery came on the occasion of the Day of the Russian military’s Troops of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence (RHBZ) on November 13, the press service of Rostec said in a statement, noting that the new systems were equipped with “a modernized anti-drone complex.”

“Prior to delivery, in order to assess the quality and compliance with the requirements of the regulatory and technical documentation, the products were subjected to operational acceptance testing. According to the test results, the products demonstrated high quality and compliance with the tactical and technical characteristics and requirements of the delivery specifications. After acceptance, the batch was delivered to units of the Russian Armed Forces for intended use,” the press service quoted a manufacturer representative as saying.

Notably, on one of the delivered TOS-1As, factory workers wrote “For Kirillov!” in honor of the former head of the RHBZ, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov who made an invaluable contribution to the creation, adoption, and modernization of the system.

The TOS-1A can be armed with up to 24 unguided 220 mm thermobaric rockets with a range between six and ten kilometers. The system’s rockets are armed with a powerful fuel air explosives warhead.

Rostec specified that the newly delivered systems are based on the chassis of T-72 main battle tanks. It also said that a new version of the TOS-1A based on the T-80 with a number of improvements that provide greater range, accuracy, and automation of processes was being tested. News about this version first broke out in July.

The Russian military has been using the TOS-1A to target the fortifications, gatherings, and equipment of Kiev forces since the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine.

It’s worth noting that a completely new version of the system based on a 6×6 Ural-63706-0120 all-terrain vehicle, dubbed the TOS-2, was tested in the course of the operation.

The TOS-2 is equipped with a digitalized fire-control system, a modern sight, a navigation system and an electronic protection system from precision-guided weapons. The system is also said to be armed with more powerful rockets with a range of up to 20 kilometers.
