On August 19, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Kiev forces had attempted to attack the Crimean Peninsula with a Soviet-era S-200 anti-aircraft missile that was modified for ground attack.

“Russia’s air defense capabilities timely detected and intercepted it in the air,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that no casualties or damage on the ground were reported.

The ministry announced just a few hours later that an air base in the Novgorod region came under attack from a suicide drone.

In its statement, the ministry detailed that the incursion took place in the morning. According to the statement, the “Kiev regime” was behind the “terrorist attack”. The drone was detected by the air base personnel and destroyed by small arms fire, the ministry revealed. While the attack did not cause any casualties, one plane was damaged.

“A fire broke out on the airfield as a result of the terrorist attack, which was swiftly extinguished by firefighting units,” the statement said.

The attacks came following reports of heavy Ukrainian losses in several directions within the special military operation zone.

A spokesman for the Russian Vostok Group of Forces told the TASS news agency on August 19 that the group delivered destruction to several units of Kiev forces near Urozhaynoye in the Donetsk direction.

“Forward units of Battlegroup East supported by artillery and aviation delivered fire destruction to the enemy in the area of Urozhaynoye, with troops and equipment of the Ukrainian armed forces eliminated,” he said.

Meanwhile, Russian news sources shared videos showing recent strikes with FPV suicide drones against Kiev forces in the Zaporozhye and South Donetsk directions. The strikes destroyed several Ukrainian military vehicles and killed a number of personnel.

Ukraine’s recent attacks on Russian territory appears to be an attempt to distract attention from the failure of the counteroffensive, which was launched nearly eleven weeks ago. Despite sustaining heavy losses in manpower and equipment, Kiev forces are yet to make any meaningful gains in any direction.
