The Russian military is hunting down Ukraine’s remaining French-made CAESAR self-propelled howitzers with much success.
On August 20, two videos showing the destruction of two such howitzers surfaced online. Both howitzers were struck in the Dnipropetrovsk direction. One was targeted with a Lancet loitering munition, while the other was hit by multiple VT-40 FPV suicide drones.
Manufactured by France’s Nexter Systems, the CAESAR is a 155 mm 52-caliber howitzer mounted on a six-wheeled or eight-wheeled truck chassis. The howitzer can fire up to six rounds per minute and has a firing range of around 42 kilometers using extended range, full bore shells, and up to 55 kilometers using rocket assisted shells.
The CAESAR was among the first weapons supplied to Ukraine following the start of the Russian special military operation in 2022. By early 2023, Kiev forces had received 30 such howitzers from France and an additional 19 from Denmark.
In 2024, it was announced that France would manufacture 30 more CAESARs for Kiev forces, including six financed by Ukraine itself. It is unclear how many of these howitzers have been already delivered.
The howitzers failed to make any impression, but made up for some of Ukraine’s losses and by that, like other NATO military supplies, they helped prolong the conflict.
According to Lostarmour.info, a website that documents military losses based on visual evidence, at least 29 of Ukraine’s CAESAR howitzers have been already damaged or destroyed by the Russian military. Notably, most of these howitzers were taken out by drones.
