The Russian military has begun to use new, cheaply-made drones in its long-range group strike on Ukraine to identify air defenses, assess damage and act as decoys, Reuters reported on July 26, citing a Ukrainian military intelligence spokesman.
The two new types of drone are made from materials like foam plastic and plywood, the spokesman, Andriy Cherniak, told the news agency, adding that one type carries a camera and a Ukrainian mobile phone SIM card to send images back to the Russian military.
“They identify where our mobile groups are positioned, where the machine guns are that can destroy them. They’re trying … to get a picture of where all our air defenses are located,” Reuters quoted Cherniak as saying.
The drones with cameras do not carry explosives but closely resemble Russian Geran-type suicide drones and fly with groups of them, Cherniak said.
The official added that the second type of drones contains no explosive charge or only a small one and is being used as a decoy.
Because it is virtually indistinguishable from a real suicide drone from the ground, it still needs to be shot down, which reveals the locations of Ukrainian air defenses.
The new drones probably cost as little as $10,000 each despite their long range, making them cheaper than air defense missiles, according to Cherniak, who noted that these drones can fly at an altitude of 3,000 feets putting them out of range of machine guns and automatic rifles.
The Russian military has been using cheap expandable drones for reconnaissance and as decoys since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago. However, Reuters’ report reveals that these drones are now being used in long-range group strikes.
The operation in Ukraine helped Russia develop and expand its drone capabilities to the point where it can be considered one of the world leaders in the field.

what are the defence budgets of all the nato member nations? us is around $860 billion. germany $68.1 billion. uk $65.8 billion. france $56.6 billion. italy $31.6 billion. poland $29.1 billion. canada $29 billion and the list goes on. russia, spent around $75 billion in 2022 and look what they got for it.
