Russian Army Makes New Gains In Kupyansk (Videos)

The Russian military continues to advance in the direction of Kupyansk despite facing repeated counterattacks by Kiev forces.

On August 17, a spokesman for the Zapad Group of Forces announced that assault groups from the 6th Combined Arms Army had seized two strongholds, two observation posts and defeated two Ukrainian infantry platoons close to Olshana.

The group also repelled five counterattacks by the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade and the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade of Kiev forces, according to the spokesman, who said that a platoon of infantry was neutralized during the fighting.

The spokesman also said that the group used Lancet loitering munitions to destroy two Polish-made Krab self-propelled howitzers near Kucherovka and Petropavlovka as well as a Slovakian-made Zuzana self-propelled howitzer, an American-made M-777 towed howitzer and a D-20 towed howitzers near Kurilovka, Lozovaya and Novosyolovskoye.

A Tor air defense system of the group also shot down three Ukrainian drones, a Columba, Leleka-100 and Furia, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile in the Svatov direction, two attacks by assault groups from Ukraine’s 68th Jaeger Brigade were repelled by the Tsentr Group of Forces. A spokesman for the group said that ten Ukrainian troops were killed and an armored vehicle was destroyed during the fighting.

The spokesman also said that the group’s artillery had targeted units from the 21 and 42 mechanized brigades of Kiev forces near Ploschanka, Chervonopopovka and the Serebryansky forest of the Krasnolimansky direction. More than 50 troops, an infantry fighting vehicle and an armored vehicle were neutralized.

Fighter bombers of the group also carried out airstrikes on two command and observation posts and a temporary deployment point near Druzhelyubovka and Serebryanka, according to the spokesman.

In addition, a Ukrainian Leleka-100 drone and two Urgan 270 mm unguided rockets were intercepted by the group’s air defenses.

And in the Kherson direction, a Ukrainian self-propelled howitzer was destroyed along with its crew and ammunition, according to a spokesman for the regional emergency services.

“A 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system with ammunition and its crew and three Ukrainian militants were destroyed in the Kakhovka direction as a result of damage by firepower inflicted by units of the Dnepr battlegroup,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that Russian forces also destroyed a Ukrainian D-30 towed howitzer along with ammunition in the island zone, two boats with seven troops, two 120 mm mortars with their crews and ammunition and an enemy fire emplacement.

Meanwhile, Russian news sources shared videos of recent strikes with FPV suicide drones from the Zaporozhye direction that targeted Ukrainian troops, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles. One of the tanks destroyed in the strikes was identified as a Polish-made PT-91.

In another development, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that a Ukrainian suicide drone was shot down over the Belgorod region.

“At around 9:00 a.m. Moscow time today, an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack with the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) against facilities on Russian territory was thwarted. [Russian] air defenses detected and destroyed a Ukrainian combat UAV over the Belgorod Region,” the ministry said in a statement.

The failed Ukrainian drone attack on Belgorod resulted in no casualties or material losses, according to the ministry’s statement.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive does not appear to be going according to the plan. Despite deploying reinforcements and increasing attacks, Kiev forces are still sustaining heavy losses and failing to make any meaningful gains.
