On January 16, the Russian military expanded its control to the south of Krasny Liman in Donetsk capturing a settlement from Kiev forces, all while preparing to storm the key city.
Zakotnoye, located some 12 kilometers to the south of Krasny Liman, was captured by the 7th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Chistyakov Brigade of the Yug [South] Group of Forces, according to a brief statement by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“The brigade’s servicemen demonstrated courage and heroism during the offensive. Coordinated actions of reconnaissance units, artillery fire support, and effective operation of drone teams made it possible to block all enemy attempts to hold the settlement,” the statement reads.
The attack on Zakotnoye began a few days earlier. Kiev forces didn’t put up much resistance. According to preliminary information, Russian troops were even able to capture key heights to the west of the settlement.
Close to Krasny Liman, Russian troops are reported to have captured most of Ozerne. The Russian MoD could announce the capture of the settlement within a few days.
Meanwhile, the Yug Group of Forces continue to expand its control in the immediate outskirts of Krasny Liman in preparations to storm the city.
The entire area surrounding the southern entrance to Krasny Liman has been secured by Russian troops, who reached the railway leading west. The troops also expanded their control on the outer line of the eastern part of the city, advising south along Kozatska Street.
It’s worth noting that the Yug Group of Forces also made some notable gains to the north of Krasny Liman in recent days, mainly to the south of Yarova, which is located 12 kilometers away from the city. The first settlement to the north of the city, Drobysheve, is also reported to be under attack, although Ukrainian defenses there appear to be holding up.
Overall, the Russian military may be a few weeks away from storming Krasny Liman. Ukraine has a sufficient number of troops to hold onto the city. However, all supply routes are now threatened by the drone units of the Yug Group of Forces. Kiev forces could fight for the city for months, but if the supply issue is not solved, we could see a very quick collapse there.
