Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu visited the special military operation zone and listened to reports by commanders of the Tsentr Group of Forces which recently captured the strategic city of Avdeevka from Kiev forces, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on February 24.
In a statement, the ministry said that Shoigu was briefed on the current situation, the nature of the enemy’s activities and the fulfillment of combat missions by Russian troops in the operational direction.
The minister ordered to further reinforce the Tsentr Group of Forces with electronic warfare equipment during the visit, according to the ministry.
“The Russian Defense Minister set the task to further strengthen the group with electronic warfare means, primarily at the tactical level,” the ministry said.
Andrey Mordvichev, commander of the Tsentr Group of Forces, reported to Shoigu that the Orlan-30 reconnaissance drone proved to be good during the battle of Avdeevka.
“The Orlan-30 unmanned aerial vehicle system proved to be very good in the course of liberating Avdeevka settlement,” he said, according to the ministry.
The group’s attack drones destroyed more than 700 various enemy targets in the Avdeevka direction during the battle, Mordvichev said.
“During the last fortnight alone, strike drones in the Avdeevka direction destroyed more than 700 various enemy targets, including armored vehicles, artillery systems, radars and manpower of the adversary,” the ministry said, quoting the commander.
In addition, Mordvichev informed Shoigu that 200 Ukrainian troops surrendered to his group during the final push in Avdeevka.
“We have already taken away about two hundred prisoners of war after the mop-up and according to information received, we plan to hunt out about a hundred captives in coming days,” the commander said.
Mordvichev also pointed out that Kiev forces were driven back by more than ten kilometers as a result of liberating the town.
The Russian military imposed full control over Avdeevka and nearby areas on February 17. At the time, some 1,500 Ukrainian soldiers were killed while attempting to flee the town.
Recent reports revealed that Kiev forces executed wounded foreign mercenaries and booby-trapped the dead bodies of their out troops before fleeing Avdeevka, leaving behind loads of weapons and ammunition.
The Russian victory in Avdeevka was a major blow to Ukraine. The situation is now getting worse for Kiev forces. The Tsentr Group of Forces is still advancing to the north and west of the town. On February 24, it was reported that the adjacent town of Lastochkino was captured by Russian troops.
