Early on August 24, the Russian thwarted an attempt by Kiev forces to target the Bryansk and Kaluga regions with suicide drones.

In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that three drones were shot down by Russian air defenses over the two regions.

“Two UAVs [Unmanned aerial vehicles] were destroyed by air defense systems over the territory of Bryansk region. Another Ukrainian UAV was detected and destroyed by air defense means over the territory of Kaluga region,” the statement reads.

According to the ministry’s statement, the failed Ukrainian drone attack didn’t result in any casualties or material losses in Bryansk or Kaluga.

The attack attempt comes as Kiev forces continue to sustain heavy losses in different directions within the special military operation zone.

Vadim Astafyev, a spokesman for the Russian Yug Group of Forces, told TASS that the group had destroyed two deployment points and two ammunition depots of Kiev forces in the Donetsk direction.

“The battlegroup’s artillery delivered a strike, destroying two enemy temporary deployment sites and two ammunition depots near Grigorovka and Umanskoye. Also, the following targets were eliminated: pickup trucks with Ukrainian saboteurs in Dzerzhinsk and Avdeyevka, a watercraft, an armored combat vehicle and an SPG grenade launcher emplacement,” the spokesman said.

The group’s fighter bombers also carried out airstrikes with precision-guided bombs against an ammunition depot of Ukraine’s 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade in Avdeyevka, he said.

“In addition, attack and army aircraft struck amassed manpower and military hardware of the Ukrainian army in areas near the settlements of Belogorovka, Spornoye, Bogdanovka, Andreyevka, Mayorsk and Krasnogorovka,” the spokesman added.

Meanwhile in the Zaporozhye direction, Russian artillery fire eliminated a convoy of Kiev forces close to Orekhovo, according to Dmitry Rogozin, who heads a team of military experts known as the Tsar’s Wolves.

“Last night, a regiment [of the Russian Armed Forces] … and the 3rd volunteer detachment ‘Bars’ of The Tsar’s Wolves’ team burned a convoy of Ukrainian troops near Orekhovo,” Rogozin told TASS.

The moving convoy was detected with the use of objective control means, Rogozin said, adding that initial cannon artillery strike on the convoy was followed by fire from the Uragan multiple launch rocket system.

The strike caused detonation of ammunition, and all the equipment, including Western-made pieces, was destroyed, according to the military expert.

“At least seven [weapons] overall. The convoy was dispersed. The enemy is evacuating the surviving servicemen,” Rogozin specified.

In addition, the Russian Tsentr Group of Forces announced that it had repelled two attacks by Ukraine’s 63rd Mechanised Brigade close to the Torskoye salient in the Krasny Liman direction. Five other attacks by the 67th and 42nd mechanized brigades as well as the 95th Airborne Assault Brigade were also repelled by the group.

Moreover, the group’s multiple rocket launchers targeted several gatherings of manpower and equipment in the direction. As a result, 40 troops, an infantry fighting vehicle and an armored vehicle were neutralized.

The group’s air defense also shot down two Ukrainian drones and intercepted a HIMARS precision guided rocket. Furthermore, the aviation of the group conducted 16 combat sorties, carrying out eight airstrikes against Ukrainian manpower and firepower concentration areas near Yampol and Chervonaya Dibrova.

In the Kherson direction, Russian forces destroyed two boats and a Msta-B towed howitzer of Kiev forces in the island area, according to a spokesman for the regional emergency services.

“In the past 24 hours, units of the Dnepr battlegroup inflicted damage on the enemy by firepower in the island zone, destroying two boats, eight Ukrainian militants and a Msta-B howitzer with ammunition with the following casualties: four Ukrainian soldiers were killed and two others received wounds of varying severity,” the spokesman said.

Russian forces also targeted an emplacement of Kiev forces, a 120 mm mortar along with its crew with ammunition near Kherson city and a gun emplacement in Kakhovka, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile in Nikolaev, Russian Su-34 fighter bombers destroyed an entire Ukrainian S-300 long-range air defense system, including a guidance radar, a command vehicle and two launchers, with Kh-38 precision-guided missiles. Footage of the pinpoint airstrikes were shared by Russian news sources.

The sources also shared recent strikes with Lancet loitering munitions from other directions. One of the strikes destroyed a Strela-10 short-range air defense system.

Despite sustaining heavy losses and failing to make any meaningful gains, Kiev forces will not likely halt their counteroffensive any time soon. The counteroffensive could go on until winter as Kiev is facing pressure from its backers who provided hundreds of billions in military aid.
