The Russian military is tightening the knot on Kiev forces in Seversk in Donetsk, solidifying its presence to the south of the city, and advancing to the north of it.
On September 23, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the Yug [South] Group of Forces had captured Pereyezdnoye, located some five kilometers to the south of Severak. Reports indicating that Kiev forces lost control of the settlement first emerged around three weeks ago.
RIA Novosti shared footage from the battle in Pereyezdnoye, showing Russian troops clearing Ukrainian fortifications there with drones and other means.
With the Russian MoD confirming the capture of Pereyezdnoye, it is safe to assume that the battle for Zvanivka, the last settlement before the southern outskirts of Seversk, is about to begin. Kiev forces there will likely show fierce resistance as the fall of the settlement could seal the fate of Seversk.
Recent videos confirmed that the Russian military has already begun to target Ukrainian fortifications near Pereyezdnoye and in other areas to the south of Seversk.
The situation of Ukrainian defenses to the north of Seversk appears to be even worse. Russian troops are reportedly about to reach the northern outskirts of the city after capturing mine Number 6, which is located to the southwest of Serebrianka.
Storming Seversk from the northern direction will be extremely difficult as the mines pose a formidable barrier. However, Russian forces could maneuver from there to the west of Seversk, very much placing the entire city under near-complete siege.
In addition, Kiev forces in Seversk are already struggling with logistics. On September 23, Igor Kimakovsky, an adviser to the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, told TASS that the Russian military had successfully imposed fire control over the highway linking the city with Krasny Liman to the north.
The Russian military is likely targeting the highway with drones from its newly-established positions in the eastern outskirts of Yampil. The settlement is located right between Seversk and Krasny Liman. It is also possible that the highway is being targeted from Pereyezdnoye.
With Kiev forces incapable of conducting any serious counterattack, Seversk seems to be destined to be captured by the Russian military. Still, effective Ukrainian resistance could delay this.
Capturing Seversk would allow the Russian military to pressure Krasny Liman from the south, and possibly provide a chance to advance towards Slovyansk. In short, it could cause a serious collapse in Ukrainian defenses in this part of Donetsk.
