At least 20 terrorists of ISIS, including senior commanders, have been reportedly killed since the start of the Russian-backed Syrian security operation in the town of Jasim in the western countryside of Daraa.
The Syrian military, intelligence and several Russian-backed groups of local fighters launched the security operation on October 14.
In a statement released on October 17, commander of the Russian Coordination Center in Syria, Major General Oleg Yegorov, revealed that ISIS cells in Jasim were behind the October 13 bus bombing near the Syrian capital, Damascus. The attack claimed the lives of 18 soldiers and left more than 20 others wounded.
Maj. Gen. Yegorov said that at least 20 terrorists, including the organizer of the bus attack as well as others linked to ISIS operations in Daraa and in Raqqa, were killed in the Russian-backed security operation in Jasim.
Syrian authorities confirmed on the same day that senior ISIS commander Abu Abdul Rahman al-Iraqi was killed in the course of the operation, along with two of his Syrian aids Abu Muawiya al-Falih and Abu Khaled al-Adelbi.
The Syrian military deployed a large force around Jasim late on August, imposing a siege on ISIS cells in the town. The siege revealed that Jasim was under the de-facto control of the terrorist group, who established a network of hideouts in the town.
As of October 19, the security operation in Jasim is still ongoing. All roads leading to the town are still blocked and a curfew is still in effect.
The ongoing operation is the most recent in a series of blows administered to ISIS cells in Daraa by Syrian government forces and their allies. The terrorist group, who lost three of top leaders in southern Syria in similar operations in August and September, will not likely be able to operate in the region like before.
