The situation in the town of Karak in the eastern Daraa countryside, where an attack targeted Syrian government forces on November 8, remains tense.
The attack was a response to a security operation that targeted the southern outskirts of Daraa city. Five Syrian service members, including Lt. Col. Sohan Othman, were killed in the attack that was carried out by local fighters.
Six other service members were kidnapped during the attack. However, they were released by the fighters within a few hours only.
Following the attack, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) elite 4th Division and the Air Force Intelligence Directorate deployed a large strike force around Karak and cut all the roads leading to the town.
On November 11 morning, government forces launched an attack on the town to capture those responsible for the November 8 incident. The attack, however, was quickly halted as a result of an agreement.
Under the agreement, fighters from the Russian-backed 8th Brigade, a unit of the 5th Corps that is dedicated for former rebels, were deployed in Karak.

Opposition sources revealed that 8th Brigade fighters would carry out a series of raids in Karak and search for the gunmen responsible for the November 8 attack.
The attack in Karak is another example of the state of lawlessness prevailing over Daraa and other parts of Southern Syria. The coordination between government forces and former rebels is improving. However, more need to be done in order to restore security in the region.
The so called former rebels were given a choice, right?
1. To be relocated to Idlibistan. 2. To be incorporated into the military. 3. To be disarmed.

Most of them a ex FSA fighters who evaded military service and are still wanted by the Government, and a few of them are Druze militia men who also refused to serve in the Syrian military because they preferred to defend their own towns and villages. Some of them are the relatives and friends of the soldiers serving in the Russian organized 5th army corps, that’s why the 5th corps 8th battalion is replacing the 4th division and Air Force Intelligence with its own people. The 4th Division is supported and organized by Iran, the same is partly true for sections of Air Force Intelligence, but the 5th army corps is Russian backed, so they’ll have a better chance of calming down the protestors than the Iranian backed forces will. Most of the military evaders have several choices now, either join Russia’s 5th army corps, join Iran’s 4th division, or join Syrian Military Intelligence [not Air Force Intelligence], be relocated, or be put in jail. Most of them opt for the 5th army corps if they can, but Iran’s been placing obstacles in their way and making it easier for recruits to join the Iranian recruitment drive lately.

The attack against Government forces was at Da il [Dael], and the kidnapping were at Al Ajami, they weren’t at Al Karak, and the SAA is besieging 2 towns, both Al Karak and Al Harak. So Iran’s pulling out its forces and the Russians are moving back in, mmm. The last time the 5th corps/8th Battalion was sent to Daraa things didn’t work out so well for the Government or Russia. The 5th corps were sent in and told to put down the anti Iranian protests in Daraa, but Assad failed to understand the people they were sending in to stop the protests were mostly all related to, or else knew most of the protesters, so Iran was very unhappy about things when the protest just became worse. And then just after that there was a lethal bomb attack against the 5th corps which resulted in mass defections back to the opposition, that was a terrible blow for Russia and Assad. Fingers crossed things will go better this time around, if they don’t God help the Syrian people.
