On June 25th, the Army-2019 forum opened at the Patriot Congress and Exhibition Center outside Moscow.
On the first day of the event, attendees and media could mostly see Russian hardware. According to preliminary estimates, the forum will be attended by over 1,500 enterprises that will demonstrate more than 27,000 products and technologies.
Most notably, Russia’s Krylov State Scientific Center is expected to display a principally new concept of an aircraft carrier that will outshine the UK’s flattop Queen Elizabeth by its operational characteristics, the Center’s scientific head Valery Polovinkin told TASS.
“This year, we will demonstrate a full-fledged aircraft carrier from our viewpoint with a displacement of about 60,000 tonnes and with a very substantial and balanced pool of aircraft,” the Krylov Center’s scientific head said, noting that “this is a fundamentally new solution for the aircraft carrier project.”
“An aircraft carrier with a conventional propulsion unit is the distinctive feature of the version offered to the Navy. It features a gas turbine power unit. To a certain extent, it can be compared to the UK’s aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth. They are about equal by their displacement but the conceptual project of the Krylov Center has an advantage by the number of aircraft, sea endurance and, most importantly, by the number of take-off places,” Polovinkin said.
The first version of the conceptual project of a large aircraft carrier with a nuclear-powered propulsion unit and the ability to carry up to 100 aircraft and displace about 100,000 tonnes was demonstrated at the Army-2017 forum.
Specifically, Rostec is to exhibit over 1,000 pieces of military equipment. These include tanks, IFVs, helicopters, UAVs, artillery systems and ammunition, advanced firearms, communications equipment, EW systems and many more.
“This year we’ve invited delegations from over 100 countries to take part in ARMY-2019, official meetings will be held with 70 of them on the sidelines of the Forum. I would like to point out, that the level of representation of partner countries is quite high this year: over 30 of them are headed by defense ministers, their deputies and chiefs of the general staff. We will present them over 1000 pieces of advanced weapons, armor, helicopter, artillery and other technology. We will also demonstrate modern ammunition, domestic firearms, communication, electronic warfare and intelligence systems. Russia confidently continues to occupy second place in the world by the volume of arms exports.
In 2018, Rosoboronexport’s deliveries amounted to $13.7 billion and export portfolio exceeded $50 billion, which are a new record for us. In many ways, these numbers are achieved via active marketing through such platforms as the Army Forum”, said the CEO of Rostec Sergey Chemezov.
Separately, CEO of Rosoboronexport Alexander Mikheyev said that the company had stopped cooperation with the US and Western Europe almost entirely.
According to him, a number of other countries have been affected due to this suspended cooperation.
“For example, Afghanistan, for which the Pentagon had bought Mi-17 helicopters that have been used by the Afghan armed forces very successfully. Now the US has decided to supply its Black Hawk helicopters to Afghanistan, which are inferior to Russia’s Mi-17 helicopters in terms of transport productivity and usage,” he said.
The Rosoboronexport CEO expects that the sanctions imposed by the US and West Europe will be in force for a long time.
“Unfortunately, now we are not seeing any positive changes. Russia is calling on the US and other countries to adopt an unbiased approach and review their decisions. Everything sometimes comes to an end, and we hope that this will happen. And now we have learnt how to work in new conditions, although they are challenging for us,” Mikheyev said.
Army Recognition shot an introductory video for the event:
The Russian Helicopter Holding, part of Rostec, for the first ever presented its newest Mi-28NM [Night Hunter] attack helicopter and the Ka-52 reconnaissance and combat helicopter.
The Mi-28NM is the first serialized Night Hunter.
The Mi-28NM helicopter gunship is designed to search for and destroy low-speed air targets, tanks, armored and non-armored vehicles as well as enemy manpower in daytime and at night, in all weather conditions.
In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that 100 modernized Mi-28NM should be delivered to the Russian armed forces by 2028.
The upgraded version of the Ka-52 attack helicopter, the Ka-52M, would be created by 2022. The experimental design work on the upgraded helicopter will take into account Russia’s combat experience in Syria.
The 2S42 Lotos is a new self-propelled mortar system, designed for the Russian airborne and naval infantry units. The vehicle is presented for the first time to the public at Army-2019. According to Army Recognition, the 2S42 is based on a BMD airborne tracked chassis but with 7 road wheels.
Lotos is armed with a 120 mm breech-loaded mortar manually loaded. This artillery system can be used as a mortar or a howitzer, and delivers direct or indirect fire. The Lotos is operated by a crew of four who can fire six to eight rounds per minute, at a range of up to 13 kilometers.
KRET is also present and is displaying piloting and navigational equipment for airplanes, helicopters and drones, and a whole set of devices designed to diversify the output.
Nudelman is displaying the Sosna missile air defense system and BMP-3 with add-on armor.
The Russian Airborne Troops are showing an unidentified UGV. Apart from the picture below, there is absolutely no other information on the piece of hardware.
The event runs through June 30th, so there will be much more reveals from companies that are not only Russia, look forward to updates.
Following are some photographs from the event, showing various systems:
Cost of the new carrier versus x 2 Typhoon-class SSGN’s and x2 Status-6 carriers?
The US plans of the 1990’s were to completely destroy the industrial engineering infrastructure within Russia. Thousands of factories across Russia were stripped of machine tools and in most cases the buildings were abandoned.
The goal of the US was to snatch Soviet world the arms trade sales that equalled in value that of the US pre 1991. The US pretty well succeeded in doing this via the privatisation at Fire Sale prices ( theft) of Russian state assets, funded by Western merchant banks who used a chosen few Russian Frontmen as figureheads.
President Yeltsin was am embarrassing disaster for the Russian people. However there was a faing glimmer of self respect left in him, when he supported the rise of the now President Putin toward the end of hid tenure.
President Putin set to work in restoring the scientific and engineering assets within the Russian Federation. This has taken nearly 20 years, and today Russia is again able to produce the weapons necessary to rebuff the US plans to strip the Russian people of their heritage.
The US as we can see is in a state of national hysteria, at home and abroad, long may that last :)
thas why pro western oposition cannot win in Russia!..imagine Navalny president means a total disaster for Russia like other pro western like Gorbachov and Yeltsin ( End of Soviet Union,Nato expasion, colour revolution, war in Yugoslavia, Chechenia,Transniester,Ossetia,Abjazia)..
Can you just imagine what will be in next 20-30 years…
It will be a rough journey whatever happens I would think.
Israel will not let Russia to succeed in their economic and self reliance goals. They will destroy every industry in Russia.
Israel will try.
I do not think they will succeed though. The world as a whole is now realising why Jews , especially Khazar fake jews, are disliked historically.
All one needs to do is look at the conditions in Gaza, that is a de facto concentration camp for the Palestinian people.
Russia and China needs to build a joint single stage aerospace vehicle to explore other planets in solar system. They also need to build a 100 meters diameter optical telescope.
This could well happen I think, and even more cooperation as well.
If the Russians were to rebuild a new aircraft carrier, would it be better to build a CVF or a heavy aircraft cruiser again? (TAVKR)
Sacrificing flight deck (and some aircraft carrying capacity) for (6 – 8 x 8) UKSK VLS cells would make more sense.
And at the same time to be a mine sweeper and torpedo launcher, that would make 4 X sense
It was a simple question posed, what would be more effective for Russia’s needs, 100% aircraft carrier or 60% aircraft carrier, 40% heavy cruiser?
I’m suggesting a heavy aircraft carrying cruiser is still the way to go, more relevant now than before. (this is the age of stand-off bombardment first, then strike jets second)
From my limited knowledge a cruiser carries missiles and a carrier carries airplanes , the second being a lot more expensive to maintain, so having both on the same ship is like eating caviar with soy or noodles at the same time. If a country feels threatened, nuclear subs is the best invest, if she wants so show off and participate on international drills with friends, a carrier, assault/landing, destroyers(not cruiser) in this order would make it.
Well I appreciate the reply, but from my limited knowledge myself, the existing Russian carrier-class (Project 11435) is classed by themselves as a heavy aircraft carrying cruiser, (not simply an aircraft carrier) as it carries not only a complement of jets, but also a considerable amount of heavy-weight anti-ship missiles. (P-700 Granit)
It was an aircraft carrier at first but since it couldn’t compare with with modern aircraft carriers they downgraded it to half aircraft half cruiser. And they don’t need an aircraft carrier since they don’t have how to escort it, their battle ships using tug boats to tow them and no matter how much they will invest they will never be able to compare to US Marine so yes, missiles boats are good enough for now.
Well I think if you had a scenario where you had a USN CSG meeting a Russian naval battlegroup (mid-Ocean) consisting of modernized Kirov-class, Slava-class and destroyes/frigates (say Sovremenny/Udaloy class and Gorshkov class) head-on in a hypothetical engagement, then the USN CSG might well face there a severe shock and destruction, with or without a Russian carrier providing fleet air-defense. (even more so if a hypothetical super-heavy Typhoon-class submarine missile cruiser (SSSGN) were in the mix)
Today even in the worst games Russian and American fleets won’t have a meeting, somewhere to have a brawl like in the good ol’ war. The strike groups are meant to deal with countries like Iran and below, eventually to make an example of ‘what could happen if you don’t listen to us’. Russia doesn’t have a global economy to protect, having a Mediterranean port is already a huge accomplishment
The last time the U.S. war gamed a CSG scenario with Iran, the U.S. lost it’s fleet. Russia has a huge global Energy Empire to protect, you see Russian interests on every continent. The Venezuelans had Russian strategic bombers visiting recently, Cuba has a cruise missile equipped frigate visit in the past few days. (for example)
You know what bothers me? when people think their interlocutor is stupid because they are too lazy to think of an argument.
Your “(for example)” is my example of what I said above.
This visit make a news for the simple reason this kind of events happen rarely, nobody wants to read news every time a US ship or bomber visits a foreign country.
As for the scenario, yes I know about it, that’s why I said like Iran and bellow, hello?
As for “Russia having a huge Energy Empire to protect”, give me a single example of a Russian business, on another continent, that could be protected by the Russian fleet.
Do I detect a touch of being a tad narked here with you?
With regards your poser: “As for “Russia having a huge Energy Empire to protect”, give me a single example of a Russian business, on another continent, that could be protected by the Russian fleet.”
Well two/three examples immediately spring to mind here, Russian business interests in Iraq, Iran and Venezuela.

Can’t open the link, they want me to subscribe but from what I understand Russia couldn’t be less interested in those countries to sell their own fossil.
Perhaps your understanding is wrong?
Particularly as the Russians have signed contracts with those states with regarding the exploitation of resources.
Then you have also the non fossil fuel energy side of the Empire too. (i.e civil nuclear technology (i.e power plants and reactors) sales)
Yeah, I could be wrong. I give you that for now. Need to read more about this topic.
I somewhat agree.
Its good russia has designs for carriers but it doesnt really fit into its doctrine of defense.
I would keep the design project going but keep the costs down.
Exactly! the designs would be futuristic compared to existing ones. Also they could design a stellar economy. Every Russian will have at home money from the future.
That carrier is probably a ruse , to tempt the US to continue building aircraft carriers until bankruptcy. That carrier will not be built before 2030 if ever , it does not make strategic or economic sense for Russia. The Russians have the best missile and rocket propulsion technology in the world, they can easily develop a multipurpose , long range hyper-sonic cruise missile for a fraction of the cost of that thing and it’s planes. The project 23560 Lider Class destroyer , is most likely the ship to be built between now and 2025. It makes complete sense for Russia to build such ships. Lider Class vessels armed with excellent anti-ship and hyper-sonic cruise missiles , are far better at power projection than a single expensive aircraft carrier. Perhaps that carrier model was showcased to tempt the Chinese into ordering such a vessel??
All nuclear powered USA carriers (10-11) maintenance is around $20 billion / year. They spend more money on ice cream.
Googled project 23560 Lider Class destroyer – it looks like a pagoda. It reminds me of the Americans jokingly calling the WWII Japanese cruisers “Christmas trees”
You can’t afford the ice cream… That is actually borrowed money as the U.S.govt can’t afford to run them without borrowing to do so. (financed by other countries purchasing U.S. debt) i.e They form a percentage of U.S. govt annual deficit spending. (roughly $1Trillion presently)
We dont have Muhammed or Russian Communist Economies.
Nothing wrong in borrow for buying a hen, if it gives a lot of eggs and they pay the loan back as well as a living feeding You.
But of course You can save for buying a hen for own money and then get more profit after many years having dead money under the carpet. .
I’d invest in cocks and hens then I get more eggs, then more cocks and hens then more At last I will be a millionaire…All I need to be patient.
How else can I explain debt economy for morons is a vital part for the succes for so many.
I still work hard to get my first million :)
My sister and her housbound have 8-10 hens and sometimes chickens, which fit to their big garden. They get free eggs and old hens for soup, bacause they can sell eggs. Both has full times jobs and hens in the garden makes them relaxed.
The first job for their children even close to be babies was to find eggs and take them to the kitchen. All 3 children today are in jobs, where they have to be very carefull and very accurate.
None of them are millionaires but seemes happily married having children themselves.
It sounds that they are living the American Dream to me
Haha. I will tell them that. Until they was chocked by the walls fell down in Berlin they both were fanatic Communists :) He was elected to the Counsil parlement as well.
You meant the hens living the American dream ?
Well, as a hen I can’t be but proud one of us was elected to the Council parliament. My grandfather was also a guardian at a chicken extermination farm, but we are friends with them now.
Yeah butnl the money you lose to service that debt, over a long time becomes unsustainable and removes that money from the pool and it goes in the bankers pockets.thus needing moe money be created.
I dont see how this is sustainable.
Most of the time I pay back the loan still having my investment as a growing way of living.
Why dont You see, where it works well.
You are right about the bankers, but actually You can do as me and be a stockholder and get that benefit back. We should tax bankers and too rich more. I agree in that.
The key is loans and investments starting with school, education, skills and hard work paid by hour and equal wages for all for doing the same job.
We wouldnt do as we do, if it didnt work. I am public employed and well paid by that for doing my job well not needing any corruption.
Well your honorable, all it takes is one that ismt honorable to skew everything.
Ive seen enough of it in my industry, corruption is rampant everywhere.
Links to something better would be nice.
When you see an American, please buy him an ice cream.
You are of course referring to Lockheed Martin’s F-37 stealth single scoop tactical combination ice cream / cone which costs $1.6 m USD / scoop and must be deployed with the support of an F-19 growler EW napkin at1.5M USD / napkin to be effective. To date no one has successfully sunk a US navy ship where this ice cream cone / napkin has been deployed.
This is a far, far superior to the 1970’s vintage Russian soft serve fudge dipped cones which can be detected from near space using the dedicated stealth “dairy hawk” drone @ $120 m / ea that can map every dairy product in a 10,000 mile area including some popsicles, freezies and even fruit smoothies.
A typical deception, maintenance costs might be $20 billion a year?
But it costs $1.5 million a day to run each carrier, and if you add on the support vessels it’s another $1 million a day, per carrier.
But The US spending $850 billion plus a year on war is a good thing, it means American children don’t get a decent education and they are very unhealthy. It is much easier to control sickly idiots than healthy educated people, and will mean Americas defeat will come that much sooner.
Just few weeks ago you were praying that Russia nuke America, now you are worried about the American children not receiving a decent education?
There you go twisting the facts again, exactly where did I say I was worried about American children?
Right above “But The US spending $850 billion plus a year on war is a good thing, it means American children don’t get a decent education and they are very unhealthy.”
Is English a second language?
Are you still worried for the American children? Or your mood fluctuates between the shots?
I am conflicted, I hate to see any child deprived, but in the case of America, educated children grow up into people who desire to rule the world and force their values on the whole planet. Uneducated American children are growing into the kind of fanatics you find in India. Which is bad for Indians, but they don’t bother the rest of the world. Look at India, and you see Americas future.
“educated children grow up into people who desire to rule the world and force their values on the whole planet.” No silly, Americans are too busy to think about you or your country, if they grew up to rule the world and subjugate your country they knew at least your capital and maybe spend some time talking with you on here.
Wooow, Topol is insane.
YAYYY Russia has new aircraft carrier!
