The Russian Military Police has deployed a 1L271 Aistyonok counter-battery radar in the vicinity of the town of Ain Issa in northeastern Syria.
The radar was spotted in a video posted by the Rojava Media Center on December 18. The video documents Turkish shelling on Ain Issa and its outskirts. The town, which is controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, was attacked by Turkish-backed militants.

Aistyonok, which was developed by Russia’s defense giant Almaz-Antey, is a mobile radar designed to located fire weapons like field artillery and anti-aircraft guns. The system can calculate the trajectory of incoming shells.
The radar can detect moving ground targets at a distance of up to 20 km, mortar fire positions at a distance of up to 5 km, moving ground equipment at a distance of up to 20 km. It can also adjust artillery fire from 5 to 15 km depending on the conditions.

The system was installed at a joint post of the Russian Military Police and the Syrian Arab Army. Several posts were established around Ain Issa in October of last year and earlier this month in order to observe the ceasefire in northern Raqqa.
The Russian Military Police are likely using the Aistyonok radar to record ceasefire violations around Ain Issa. Turkish forces have been shelling the town for the last few months, which led to civilian losses.

If they were going to be used for their intended purpose I’d say great news, now the Russians or SAA artillery will be able to retaliate and take out the offending Turkish artillery when they break the ceasefire, but then I got to the part where it said they’re just going to monitor ceasefire violations, not stop them. :[ I used to believe Russia was among the staunches countries in the world, and it still may be, but under the leadership of the man who just granted himself a lifetime immunity from any future criminal proceedings, he’s giving me the impression that Russia’s now become one of the most undependable nations on earth.
