On April 13, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense of Russia Major General Igor Konashenkov announced that Russia has an evidence that the UK had pressured the White Helmets organization to provoke a chemical attack in Syria’s Duma on April 7.
“Today, the Russian defense ministry has other evidence proving the United Kingdom’s direct involvement in the organization of this provocation in Eastern Ghouta,” Maj. Gen. Konashenkov said, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
According to the spokesman, the goal of the provocation was to trigger a US attack on the Syrian government.
Maj. Gen. Konashenkov also revealed that Russia had reached some of the people who were directly involved in filming the alleged chemical attack. However, the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman didn’t clarify if Russia will be sharing the confessions of those people with the public anytime soon.
According to Konashenkov, a group of people, which was a primary source of photos and footage of the alleged chemical attack, was informed of a large-scale artillery attack on Damascus planned by Jaish al-Islam. The White Helmets were ordered to arrange the provocation after retaliatory strikes by Syrian government forces.
The defense ministry published an interview with a man who said his name was Halil Ajij, and who said he was a medical student working at Douma’s only operational hospital.
“On April 8, a bomb hit a building. The upper floors were damaged and a fire broke at the lower floors. Victims of that bombing were brought to us. People from the upper floors had smoke poisoning. We treated them, based on their suffocation,” he explained the origin of footage.
Then, a man unknown to Ajij came and said there was a chemical attack and panic ensued.
“Relatives of the victims started dousing each other with water. Other people, who didn’t seem to have medical training, started administering anti-asthma medicine to children. We didn’t see any patient with symptoms of a chemical weapons poisoning,” he said.
First Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff’s Main Operations Department Lieutenant General Viktor Poznikhir accused the Western-backed White Helmets, on April 11, of staging the chemical attack in Duma district.
Observers believe that the UK and the US will be in a very difficult diplomatic situation, if Russia proved to the public that the White Helmets played a role in staging the chemical attack in the Duma district.
