The body of a Russian diplomat was found near the building of the Russian embassy in Berlin, German outlet Der Spiegel reported on November 5th.
The incident took place weeks ago, back on October 19th.
The man was reportedly found by the Berlin police, who were guarding the diplomatic mission. Attempts by doctors to revive the man were unsuccessful. Apparently, the man fell from one of the upper floors of the embassy, the outlet reported.
The deceased served as the second secretary of the embassy since the summer of 2019. However, the German security services suspected that he was a hidden agent of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB), according to Der Spiegel.
According to outlet, the man was a relative of a high-ranking officer of the Service for the Protection of the Constitutional System and the Fight against Terrorism (the Second Service of the FSB), which, among other things, is responsible for the fight against “internal political threats.” Western intelligence services associate it with the murder of former Chechen field commander Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin.
According to the publication, the Russian embassy did not agree to an autopsy of the body of the deceased, calling the incident a “tragic incident”, and the body was handed over to the Russian side. The circumstances of the alleged fall and the cause of death are unknown, Der Spiegel’s interlocutors from security structures said. The German prosecutor’s office was unable to conduct an investigation, since the deceased had diplomatic status.
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christopher Burger confirmed to Interfax the death of an employee of the Russian Embassy in Berlin. At the same time, Burger explained that he could not provide any details of what happened due to the provisions on the protection of personal data and information.
The Bellingcat “investigative website” and The Insider claimed that they had revealed the identity of the individual in question, but it has not been confirmed.
Of course these outlets are attempting to connect everything into one massive web that relates to Alexey Navalny’s alleged poisoning in 2020, as well as incidents prior to that, such as Sergey and Yulia Skripal’s alleged poisoning and more.
