On February 12, the Russian Defense Ministry released a video of a large Turkish military convoy deploying in Syria’s Idlib.
The video, which was filmed by a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), shows dozens of Turkish military vehicles moving in Idlib’s de-escalation zone.
The Russian MoD held Turkey responsible for the current crisis in Idlib. In an official statement, the ministry said that Ankara didn’t fulfil its commitments within the 2018 Sochi agreement. The ministry added that deployment of more weapons and personnel in Idlib could only escalate the situation.
Hundreds of battle tanks, armored vehicles, rocket launchers and artillery pieces of the Turkish Armed Forces were deployed in Greater Idlib over the last few weeks. The Turkish military also established several new positions in the Syrian region, apparently without coordination with Russia or Damascus.
Turkey had committed to stabilize the situation in Greater Idlib, reopen strategic highways and expel terrorist elements from the region. However, the exact opposite happened. Turkish President even threatened the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) with military action if it doesn’t withdraw from recently-liberated areas in the region.
If Ankara moves to implement its military threats against Syria, a direct confrontation between the Turkish military and the Syrian Army could take place in Greater Idlib in the coming weeks.

The SAA needs to bring up every AD system it can muster including the old SAM-6 and Shikla 23mm quads used in conjuction with SA-17 and Iranian Misagh 2 if the Turkeys try in bring in aircover. The F-16 is a lightweight old fighter and has no chance against layered SAM defence starting with S-300, then BUK and Pantsir beefed up by AAA. The SAA downed an RF-4 Phantom using just 23 mm AAA a few years back.

This doesn’t look good for Russia who were responsible with Turkey setting up a demilitarized zone. Syrians may get the impression that Turkey and Russia are in collusion in destroying Syrian sovereignty considering that Russia had almost 2 years to ensure Turkey complied with the Sochi/Astana agreement. Puts Putin in a difficult spot.
The army was busy elsewhere and needed the relative calm of a “frozen conflict” in Idlib. It allowed them to consolidate gains made in other areas, clean up Hama and swiftly move to re-occupy NE Syria when US troops withdrew from the Turkish border. While the constant terrorist shelling of civilians in nearby areas was a serious problem for the people of those villages, there was never a real threat of the terrorists expanding from that area, and that allowed Syria to divert resources to other areas. Had Turkey honored its part of the bargain, Idlib might have returned to government control through negotiation. In the absence of that, Syria’s military operation there is somewhat shielded from international criticism.

This move by Turkey smells like it was pushed from outside the Middle-East.
