The Russian military has destroyed more of Ukraine’s newly-acquired artillery systems with its advanced loitering munitions.
Between March 15 and 18, Russian sources shared videos documenting six recent strikes with Lancet and KUB-BLA loitering munitions against artillery systems of Kiev forces within the special military operations zone.
The strikes targeted three American-made M777 towed 155 mm howitzers, two American-made M109-type self-propelled 155 mm howitzers and a single Czechoslovakian-made RM-70 multiple rocket launcher.
Both the KUB-BLA and Lancet loitering munitions were developed by the ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russian defense giant Kalashnikov.
The KUB-BLA, which is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system, has an endurance of 30 minutes and a three-kilogram warhead.
On the other hand, Lancet is available in two versions, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 40 minutes and a three-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of an hour and is armed with a warhead weighting five kilograms. Both versions are equipped with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system as well as an electro-optical system that can detect, track and lock on static and moving targets.
The Russian military’s Lancet and KUB-BLA loitering munitions inflicted heavy losses on Kiev forces in the last few months. Ukrainian attempts to stop the loitering munitions with air defense fire, electronic warfare means and countermeasures all had little or no success.
