As of June 1, active offensive actions of Russian forces are focused on the areas to the south of Izum, around Liman as well as around Lysichansk, Severodonetsk and Popasnaya. The tactical offensive is also ongoing in Avdeevka, in the countryside of Donetsk.
The Russian security operation in Liman is almost completed, the remnants of the defeated units of Kyiv are being eliminated in its countryside and flee to the eastern bank of Seversky Donets River. At the same time, the main grouping of Russian forces has not crossed the river yet. There are chances that the front will stabilize for some time along the line created following the liberation of Liman amid active offensive actions in other directions.
In the area of Severodonetsk, Kyiv’s troops are slowly retreating from the city under strikes of Russian artillery and aviation. Urban fighting is ongoing there. Pro-Russian sources claim that the city will be full liberated within the next few days.
The only chance of Kyiv to prolong the battle is to send even more reinforcements there that will be inevitably eliminated in the current conditions.
In the region of Kherson, the widely-promoted Ukrainian advance appeared to be a total failure and Kyiv’s troops suffered significant losses in the so-called ‘gray zone’ along the contact line. The situation in the region remains stable.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry released a new statement on the development of the military operation in Ukraine (source):
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the special military operation in Ukraine.
High-precision air-based missiles of the Russian Aerospace Forces have hit 5 control points, as well as 29 areas of AFU manpower and military equipment concentration.
Operational-tactical, army and unmanned aviation have hit 61 areas of AFU manpower and military equipment concentration.
The attacks have resulted in the elimination of more than 140 nationalists, as well as 9 tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, 1 battery of BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers, 6 artillery mounts and mortars, 13 AFU vehicles of various purposes and 1 OSA-AKM anti-aircraft missile system.
Russian air defense means have shot down 1 Su-25 aircraft of the Air Forces of Ukraine near Sergeevka, Donetsk People’s Republic and 1 Mi-8 helicopter near Kharkov during the day.
In addition, 7 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles have been shot down near Gorlovka, Golmovskyi, Yasinovataya, Varvarovka in Donetsk People’s Republic, Malye Prokhody, Novaya Gnilitsa in Kharkov Region, and Pyatikhatka in Kherson Region.
Also 2 Ukrainian Smerch multiple-launch rockets have been intercepted near Malaya Kamyshevakha and Kamenka in Kharkov Region.
Missile troops and artillery have hit 128 command posts, 169 firing positions of artillery and mortar batteries, as well as 623 areas of AFU manpower and military equipment concentration.
The attacks have resulted in the elimination of up to 200 nationalists, as well as 24 units of weapons and military equipment, including 1 battery of 155-mm M777 howitzers, 203-mm 2S7 Pion mount, BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher and 2 ammunition depots.
In total, 185 Ukrainian aircraft and 129 helicopters, 1,077 unmanned aerial vehicles, 326 anti-aircraft missile systems, 3,363 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 457 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,744 field artillery and mortars, as well as 3,329 units of special military vehicles were destroyed during the operation.

In the nearest future, Russian forces will likely keep the focus of their active offensive action in the area of Lysichansk aiming to eliminate the grouping of Kyiv’s troops there. The liberation of Severodonetsk and Lysichansk will allow to secure the important gains made around Popasnaya and create condition for the breakthrough around Izum and thus the successful advance towards Slavyansk from these directions.
At the same time, the situation will develop around Avdeevka, which is an important strong point of Kyiv’s forces around Donetsk. The liberation of this area is a key part of wider efforts to finally secure residential areas in the Donetsk countryside. Until then, Kyiv troops will continue their daily strikes on civilian targets there.
In own turn, Kyiv will try to make tactical attacks and create some PR victories on other parts of the combat zone, like Kherson, Kharkov and Zaporojie regions. However, such attempts, if they are made without serious preparations, will only lead to even more setbacks of Kyiv’s forces (like it recently happened around Kherson).

I don’t think so. It’s really a complicated front with areas being liberated a town or village at a time. Lots of River and stream barriers. Maybe by mid summer this will be accomplished, especially given Russia’s intent not to harm civilians and infrastructure while fighting an army which does both. Hopefully, air and artillery will continue to soften up Kharkov and Odessa areas for the subsequent liberation.
Given the numerous civilian casualities in the Donbass and even on the territory of RF, I am asking myself when Russia will finally start to attack “decision making centres” in Kiev, e.g. Ministry of Defense, headquarter of general staff, headquarter of the SBU, etc.

How can that even be true when they only had about 200,000 troops. that means Russia more than half of its fighting force and has not even drafted troops yet.
Russia really needs to make faster progress because Ukraine is getting the MLRS from USA that can out range everything Russia has. This means, Ukraine will just sit back at a distance and annihilate Russian troops, artillery, etc. and Russia won’t be able to do anything or reach these MLRS which will be heavily defended with AA.

UKraine needs the HIMARS but not just 50-100 but at least 500 pieces. If US delivers 500 Himars and in addition USA+Turkey deliver 500 Reapers + 500 Bayraktar drones, yes then, that would be a major game-changer.
