The Russian military continues to use Geran-2 suicide drones, which were allegedly supplied by Iran, in the ongoing special operation in Ukraine.
On February 25, video footage surfaced online documenting six recent Geran-2 drone strikes on positions of Kiev forces on different fronts within the special military operation zone. The drones hit their targets with pinpoint accuracy.
The Geran-2 is reportedly a derivative from the Shahed-136 suicide drone which was developed by Iran’s Shahed Aviation Industries. Ukraine and its allies, including the United States, alleged that the Russian military received hundreds of these drones directly from Iran after the start of the special military operation. However, both Moscow and Tehran denied this.
The suicide drone, which is powered by a four-cylinder two-stroke gasoline engine, has a range of up to 2,500 kilometers and can carry a warhead weighting 30-50 kg.
A Russian military-grade GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system is reportedly used in the Geran-2 in contrast to the Iranian Shahed-136, which utilizes a simple guidance system built around civilian GPS receivers.
The Russian military has been also employing a lighter suicide drone, the Geran-1. The drone, which is said to be a copy of Iran’s Shahed-131, is powered by a Wankel engine and has a range of 900 kilometers only. It is typically armed with a 15 kg warhead. The drone’s guidance system is similar to that used in the Geran-2.
Russian suicide drones have inflicted heavy human and material losses on Kiev forces since they were first interduced last year.
Ukraine received several Western-made air defense and electronic-warfare systems from its allies in the last few months. However, Kiev forces are still struggling to counter the threat posed by Russia’s Geran-1 and 2 suicide drones.
