Russian Lancet Loitering Munitions Hit Nearly 40 American-Made Artillery Radar (Video)

MOSCOW REGION, RUSSIA – JUNE 25, 2019: A ZALA Lancet-3 attack drone developed by Kalashnikov Concern on display at the Army 2019 International Military Technical Forum at Patriot Park. Marina Lystseva/TASS

The Russian military has destroyed at least 19 American-made AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder counter-battery radar of Kiev forces using Lancet loitering munitions since the start of the special military operation, the ZALA Aero Group, which produces the unmanned system, revealed on April 24, citing information from Lostarmour.info, a website that documents military losses.

The AN/TPQ-36 was developed to locate the source of artillery, rocket and mortar fire. The radar scans the horizon over a 90° sector several times a second, intercepting and automatically tracking hostile projectiles, then computing back along the trajectory to the origin.

The X-band radar can detect and report the positions of up to ten different weapons in seconds, at a maximum range of 24 kilometers.

In a post to its channel on Telegram, ZALA, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern, also said that Lancet loitering munitions were used to target more than 20 other American-made counter-battery radars of the AN/TPQ-37, AN/TPQ-48, AN/TPQ-49 and AN/TPQ-50 types during the same period.

Ukraine began receiving counter-battery radars from the AN/TPQ family in 2015. After the start of the Russian special military operations, the supplies increased.

“Destroying these radars makes the task easier for our artillerymen,” ZALA said in its post, noting that “itt is not easy to detect such a radar, since the enemy tries to place them so as not to fall into the operating area of the electronic intelligence of the Russian Armed Forces, and also carefully camouflages them on the ground.”

Video footage shared by ZALA along with the post showed some 20 American-made counter-battery radars being badly damaged or completely destroyed by Lancet loitering munitions.

ZALA produces two versions of the Lancet, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighing around three kilograms.

The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a secured two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.

Intercepting the loitering munition is extremely difficult, due to its small radar cross-section and minimal infrared signature.

Ukrainian attempts to stop Lancet loitering munitions with air defense fire, electronic warfare or countermeasures have been so far largely unsuccessful.
