Along with Krasnopol guided artillery rounds, the Russian military is also using the similar Gran and Kitolov rounds during the special operation in Ukraine, a security source told the TASS news agency on July 8.
The KM-8 Gran is a 120 mm guided mortar round. On the other hand, the Kitolov is available in two versions, the Kitolov-2 120 guided mm mortar round and the Kitolov-2M 122 mm guided artillery round.
Just like the 2K25 Krasnopol 152 mm guided round, the Gran and Kitolov are guided with semi-active laser. A land-based laser designator is usually used to illuminate targets for the rounds. However, drones equipped with designators can be also used for that task.
“An optical laser seeker is installed on a drone, for example an Orlan-family drone. The drone points at a target, and a projectile hit it,” the unnamed source told TASS.
While the Krasnopol has a range of 20 to 30 kilometers, the Gran range is limited to nine kilometers only and the range of the Kitolov is no more than seven kilometers.
All three rounds were developed by the JSC KBP Instrument Design Bureau, which is known for designing the Kornet anti-tank guided missile system, the Pantsir-S air-defense system and several other advanced weapons.
Precision-guided artillery and mortar rounds like the Krasnopol, Gran and Kitolov allows the Russian military to strike high-value Ukrainian military targets with high precisions from a safe-distance and without causing any real collateral damage. These rounds are virtually unstoppable.

It is a good idea to have these weapons which are not over the requirements. Why use a missile which travels over 100km when you only need it to go less than 10km? The military operation is in the LPR and DPR, it is mainly within a short distance but also targets Ukraine, though the requirements for longer range missiles are less than for the shorter range ones. When poor conscripted and abducted Ukrainians are being wiped out by over the parr missiles and by flame throwers, a lot more could survive from lighter ones being used. Keep the hard stuff for the Nazis and mercenaries.
