The Tsentr Group of Forces had liberated the settlement of Petrovskoye, also known as Stepovoe, from Kiev forces, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed on February 28.
The settlement is located right to the northwest of the strategic city of Avdeevka in the Donetsk direction, which was captured by Russian troops earlier this month.
In its daily briefing, the ministry said that Tsentr Group of Forces liberated Petrovskoye, took more advantageous lines, and repelled eleven counter-attacks by Kiev forces close to the settlement of Leninskoye, Novgorodskoye, Novobakhmutovka, Tonenkoye, Orlovka and Pervomayskoye in the same direction.
Ukrainian losses in this direction amounted to 165 troops, four tanks, two American-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, one American-made M113 armored personnel carrier and five motor vehicles, according to the ministry.
The ministry also noted that three D-20 towed howitzers, five D-30 towed howitzers, one Msta-B towed howitzer and one Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer were destroyed in the same direction by counter-battery fire.
Russian troops first stormed Stepovoe on February 26. The first American-made M1A1 SA Abrams main battle tank of Kiev forces was destroyed near the settlement. On February 27, video footage posted on social media showed a soldier from the Tsentr Group of Forces raising the banner of his unit over Stepovoe.
The capture of Stepovoe will allow Russian troops to attack the settlement of Berdychi, a stronghold of Kiev forces. Attacks on the settlements of Orlivka and Tonenke are already underway, according to recent reports. Kiev forces are said to be retreating from some of their positions.
Berdychi, Orlivka, Tonenke and the nearby settlement of Semenovka are considered the second line of defense of Kiev forces to the northwest and west of Avdeevka. It is unclear yet if Ukraine had prepared any defenses behind the four settlements.
Overall, Kiev forces appear to be facing a very difficult situation in the Donetsk direction. The Kiev regime’s decision to sacrifice thousands of troops and hundreds of pieces of equipment in Avdeevka for propaganda purposes have apparently caused irreparable damage in this direction.
