The Russian military struck Dolgintsevo Air Base in the Ukrainian region of Krivoy Rog with Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on July 3.
The strike destroyed a MiG-29 fighter jet, aerial ammunition and service vehicles, according to the ministry, which released video footage of the strike.
In addition, Russian media reported that two Su-25 close air support jets were damaged and 15 Ukrainian troops and special forces were killed or wounded as a result of the missile strike on Dolgintsevo Air Base. This was not confirmed by the ministry, however.
Some 40 MiG-29A, MiG-29S, MiG-29MU1 and MiG-29MU2 were in service with Kiev forces before the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago. Last year, Ukraine also received at least 27 MiG-29G and MiG-29AS from Poland and Slovakia. The Russian military has already shot down many of these fighter jets or destroyed them on the ground.
This was the third Russian strike to target an air base used by Kiev forces in less than a week. The two previous strikes both targeted Mirgorod Air Base in the Ukrainian region of Poltava. In the first strike five Su-27 fighter jets were destroyed and two were damaged. In the second one, a Mi-24 gunship helicopter was destroyed.
The recent strikes showcased the Russian military ability to strike any target within Ukraine with high precision at any time. The strikes also exposed how much the air defenses of Kiev forces have been degraded.
