The Russian military has struck three American-made M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers which were deployed alongside troops of Ukraine’s elite 95th Air Assault Brigade in the Sumy region.
Video footage of the strike surfaced online on November 27. The footage shows multiple precision-guided munitions, most likely air or surface-launched missiles, impacting the Ukrainian military gatherings close to the settlement of Malyi Bobryk.
According to Russian media, the strike destroyed two HIMARS launchers and left the third with heavy damage. In addition, at least 30 troops from the 95th Air Assault Brigade were killed or wounded.
Since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the United States has supplied Kiev forces with at least 39 HIMARS launchers. Germany promised to buy three more for Kiev forces earlier this year.
These launchers are typically armed with M30/M31 series GMLRS GPS-guided rockets, which have a range of more than 70 kilometers, or MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles with a range between 165 and 300 kilometers depending on the version.
Most of Ukraine’s HIMARS launchers have been already destroyed or damaged by the Russian military. In addition, Russian air defense and electronic warfare means have significantly reduced the effectiveness of the system.
After invading the Russian region of Kursk last August, Kiev forces deployed many of their remaining launchers to neighboring Sumy. This turned out to be a big chance for the Russian military to wipe out whatever was left of these systems.
