It’s one thing to shoot down missiles, and that’s great that Russia can do that. But not being able to take out the launch platforms like planes and ships is a huge problem.

I’m not saying that the better Russian equipment can’t do that. But what’s been demonstrated today, is that the Russians and Syrians were unwilling to use the S-300s when the opportunity presented itself. The the training isn’t complete justification after the systems have been in Syria for 3 months is going to be questioned by many. And they’ve had years to prepare for taking down IAF aircraft over Israel with their other equipment, and from the looks of it. That was a complete failure. Yesterday’s exchange was not a good day for Russia. And it has done a lot of damage to Russian credibility and standing in the world.

I haven’t seen anything saying that the S-300s aren’t going to be operational until mid February. They’ve been there long enough that they shouldn’t have any trouble crewing them up with trained crews or trained crews with Russian participation.

I’m going on credible published reports that said that the systems would be operational by now and would be used to protect Syria. I haven’t seen anything to modify that. Public opinion is taken into consideration in these types of matters and the perception is that the S-300s aren’t doing the job when they should be.

He just ignores forbthe umteenth time the long stated facts that the S300 system is not yet under Syria’s authority and that the Russian MOD stated a three to four month operational training time. This strike did get missiles through but 80-85% were intercepted, an improvement in performance by about 30% now that the older systems are linked by better information and targeting software. What is needed is for thS300 systems to be released by Russia into SAA control. Until that happens Syria cannot rely on any good chance of deterring an Israeli strike by either shooting down an Israeli aircraft or responding to an attack with a counterstrike. Russia clearly is not staring Israel down any longer, a probable side effect of the stated U.S. withdrawal.

Again, the decision not to employ the S300 is a political not a military one. I have a feeling that Mach 10 capable missiles that can use multiple radar emissions points as targeting locks and that have warheads powerful enough to damage fighters from close to 100 meters away from a targeted airplane will do just fine. But you are right to point out that we don’t really know, although you actually pass judgement the other way, again without reallt knowing.
