The Russian Ministry of Defense has provided additional details on the Ukrainian attack that targeted the Crimean Peninsula late on May 23.

In a statement, the ministry said that Russian air defenses intercepted three of the American-made MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles launched by Kiev forces during the attack over Crimea. It added that two Ukrainian drones were shot down over the region of Belgorod at around the same time.

The ministry also revealed that seaborne drones launched by the Ukrainian Navy were discovered heading towards the Crimean in the Black Sea.

Three of the drones were destroyed from the standard weapons of the Black Sea Fleet naval aviation, according to the ministry.

During the attack around 20 explosions were reported in the vicinity of the city of Simferopol, presumably attributed to cluster munitions carried by ATACMS missiles.

Simferopol is the capital of Crimea, which voted to rejoin Russia in 2014 after the United States-sponsored regime change in Kiev.

“As a result of a missile attack by the enemy on the peninsula in the Simferopol region, two bystanders were killed,” Aksyonov wrote on his Telegram channel, expressing condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

The governor added that an “empty commercial property” near the city of Alushta was struck and that emergency personnel have been deployed to the scene.

The Kiev regime intensified attacks on Crimea and other Russian regions in recent weeks in an attempt to make up for the recent defeats of its forces.

The response to the latest attack by Kiev forces will likely be fierce. The Russian military could launch another series of missiles and drone strikes against military and energy infrastructure in Ukraine in the coming few days.
