Russian Navy Attacked ISIS Hideouts In Syria With Cruise Missiles: Monitoring Group

On August 13, the Russian Navy attacked hideouts of ISIS in Syria’s central region with cruise missiles, according to a report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The London-based monitoring group said that the missiles, which were allegedly launched by Russian warships from Syrian waters, hit caves and other positions used by ISIS cells as hideouts in the heart of the central region.

The missiles were heard passing over the countryside of the coastal governorate of Tartus on their way to the central region, according to the group, which didn’t provide any details on the result of the attack.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet announced any missile attack against ISIS or any other terrorist group in Syria.

The SOHR report came just three days after ISIS cells ambushed a bus of the Syrian military near the T2 pumping station in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor. At least 33 Syrian soldiers were reportedly killed in the attack.

In an initial response to the deadly attack, fighter bombers from the Russian Aerospace Forces also carried out a series of airstrikes against hideouts of ISIS cells near the administrative border between Deir Ezzor and neighboring Raqqa.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency issued a statement on August 12 holding the U.S. responsible for the attack and accusing it of supporting ISIS.

ISIS has been waging an insurgency in the central region for around five years now. Syria accused the U.S. of providing support for the terrorist group via its garrison in the southeastern area of al-Tanf and its bases in the northeastern governorates of Deir Ezzor and al-Hasakah on multiple occasions in the past.

If confirmed, the Russian missile attack would be a major development in the war against ISIS’s remaining cells in the central region.
