On April 10th, the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation declared that Russian troops from the “North” military grouping have liberated the village of Zhuravka in Ukraine’s Sumy region, marking another victory in Moscow’s efforts to establish a secure buffer zone along the border. This is the fourth village in the Ukrainian border Sumy region taken under Russian control.
Soldiers from the 83rd Guards Air Assault Brigade raised the Russian flag in the village center, symbolizing their control over the settlement:
The capture of Zhuravka weakens Ukrainian defensive lines near neighboring Belovody and Yablonovka. If these settlements fall, Russian forces could threaten Yunakovka, a strategic Ukrainian logistical hub used for supplying troops in the Sudzha direction since August 2024. Yunakovka’s loss would destabilize Ukraine’s entire eastern flank in Sumy region.
This advance is part of a broader Russian strategy to gradually secure control of the border areas in the northeastern Sumy region, mirroring tactics used in the Kharkiv direction. Should Russian forces push further toward Belopole, Vorozhba, and Konotop, Ukraine could face a crisis similar to the Vovchansk situation, where stretched defenses risk collapse due to personnel shortages. Since early April, Russian troops have intensified operations along two key frontlines:
- Zhuravka–Basovka (Sumy region) – After securing Basovka by April 6, Russian assault groups advanced toward Loknya, engaging Ukrainian forces on the village’s northern outskirts.
- Oleshnya–Guyevo (Kursk region) – Russian units reached Oleshnya’s northwestern edges by April 8. Meanwhile, forces advancing from Guyevo secured most of the border areas near Gornal, pushing Ukrainian troops back toward the border.

Zhuravka is the fourth settlement in Sumy Oblast captured by Russian forces in recent weeks. Moscow’s objective is clear: create a deep security zone to prevent Ukrainian cross-border drone and artillery strikes on Russian civilian infrastructure. At the same time, with each small advance, Russian troops move closer to establishing a full-fledged bridgehead for deeper operations into Ukrainian rear areas.
As weather improves in the coming months, the Russian military may escalate offensives, testing whether Ukraine’s stretched defenses can hold. For now, the fall of Zhuravka signals steady, methodical pressure on Ukrainian defense near Sumy.
