Russian Orlan-10 Drone Crashed In Northeastern Syria, Fourth This Year

On August 11, a Russian Orlan-10 drone crash landed in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah in northeastern Syria.

The drone crashed in the vicinity of the town of al-Matmurah. At the time, fighters the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were clashing with Turkish forces in nearby areas. At least two Turkish-backed militants were killed in the clashes. The drone may have been shot down by mistake.

The Orlan-10 has a flight duration of 16 hours and a range of 140 km. The drone can be equipped with several types of sensors to carry out different missions including reconnaissance, 3D-mapping, electronic warfare and communication relay.

This was the fourth confirmed loss of a Russian Orlan-10 drone in Syria this year.

  • On February 6, an Orlan-10 drone crashed near the town of Ain Issa in the northern countryside of Raqqa. The drone was allegedly shot down by the SDF.

  • On February 7, an Orlan-10 drone crashed in the al-Zawiya Mount in the southern countryside of Idlib. The drone was allegedly shot down by the al-Fateh al-Mubeen Operations Room.

  • On April 4, an Orlan-10 drone crashed near the town of Mashhad Ruhin in the northern countryside of Idlib. The drone allegedly crashed as a result of a technical failure.

Russia has deployed dozens of drones in Syria since the beginning of its operations in the country in 2015. Today, these drones are being used to monitor terrorist groups as well as to keep an eye on de-escalation regions.
