On April 1, the Russian Ministry of Defense released footage of a recent strike on an air-defense position of the Ukrainian military.
The pinpoint strike wiped out two transporter erector launchers (TELs) of the S-300 long range air-defense system. The TELs were likely of the 5P85D or 5P85S types, which are associated with Ukraine’s ageing S-300PS systems.
The air defense position, which was apparently detected by a drone, was likely struck by a heavy air-launched guided munition, a cruise missile or a tactical ballistic missile.
Ukraine restored several Soviet-made S-300PS, S-300PT and S-300V systems to service after 2014 in a bid to improve its air-defense capabilities. However, many of these systems were damaged, destroyed or captured in the first few weeks of the Russian special military operation in the country.
The Russian military has been working nonstop to hunt down Ukraine’s remaining air-defense systems, which still pose a real threat. The Russian MoD said that a Buk-M1 medium-range air-defense system and a guidance radar for an S-300 system were destroyed between March 31 and April 1.
Ukraine has lost more than 190 air-defense systems since the beginning of the Russian special military operation, according to the Russian MoD.
Aside from targeting Ukrainian air-defense systems, the Russian military has been also destroying air-defense and radars maintenance facilities as well as depots where anti-aircraft missiles are stored.
Ukraine’s allies in the West are currently working to bolster its air-defense capabilities in an attempt to deny Russia air superiority over the country.

So this is a response to a conversation with Wingardo, Platon and Mistick. Where Mistick had asked a question why would the Russians only send 200,000 guys against Ukraine’s 600,000 man army? I’ve been thinking about it and this is my guess.
Obviously this is the first wave of an assault and there is significant “fog of war”. Also the first iteration of “in war truth is the first casualty” was I believe first stated in Ancient Greek. So we know that right now no one knows what’s going on but we might be able to guess what the strategy is.
200,000 Russian troops using the element of surprise rush their objectives including Kiev. Why? Because according to captured intel (allegedly, fog of war and all) the Ukrainians had moved their troops to the east for a final assault on Donbass and Luhansk. Remember no civilian knows exactly how they will react to an enemy tank rolling down their street and with the army partially removed the Russians took a chance.
I know navy seals and secret CIA teams are cool and all but it’s the Green Berets that teach a civilian population how to fight. Remember the story of the Ukrainian UAV hobbyists that stopped the 40km long supply convoy on the way to Kiev? Well for all we know the 40km convoy was full of party balloons and borscht. Kiev, to use a boxing analogy would have been a first round knock out blow. Those trucks and armies coming in would have looked like a liberating army and would have signaled to the Ukrainian troops about to attack in the east the only thing that was important to them: “Your paycheck has been cut off”. Why leave the trucks sitting around so long? A 40km convoy is a huge target of opportunity for any remaining aircraft the enemy had. If the trucks aren’t attacked the enemy doesn’t have AirPower remaining. That’s pretty easy for a General of any army to understand. Probably the same thing with Mariupol. If the enemy can not counter attack a position under siege it probably can not muster its forces in such a way as to counter attack. Look at the map of Ukraine on SF moving using only major highways? That’s parade formation.
Well the Ukrainians (boxing analogy again) had some “chin” and didn’t go down in the first round. Well look what’s happening it’s an artillery duel between two countries. Well I only need one guy to call in an artillery or air strike, everyone else gets in the way. Remember the USA in Iraq 1? I think we killed more of our own than the Iraqis did. That’s why you want a smaller force, less collateral damage. Artillery rounds are cheap compared to aircraft and missiles.
Also at the fall of the USSR the Soviets (not Russians then) were amazed at our ability to pinpoint strike Saddam’s army. Look at what they are showing us now with their UAVs, Spec ops and drone footage. Killing an S300 in a warehouse dead on is pretty pin point.
Why is the war taking so long. The Russians are using diplomacy and force hand in glove. Fight a little, talk a little. 4 million Ukrainians have fled the country plus 6 million are internally displaced. Imagine an enemy army comes through your country. You’re terrified and you hunker in for a week or two until your supplies run out. You’re family and you make a run for it. You make it to the border and it’s the Army of your own country that won’t allow you to leave. All men between 18-60 have to fight as our President sits in hiding. That’s terrible optics which the Russian army will exploit to Liberate/Absorb the east and south. There are a lot of nativeRussian speakers in those areas and some nice vacation spots too.
Meanwhile the length of the war is actually in Russia’s favor as long as they can supply it. Remember the NATO countries hate casualties, the Russians don’t care as much. I think average life expectancy in Russia for a male is something around 50 years old. There’s a lot of alcoholism because there isn’t much opportunity for a man with no connections. To die gloriously in battle might be a plus. But what of poor Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia? Completely surrounded by Russia and Belarus but committed to NATO. What did they think before the war? “If we can last a month on our own NATO will help us!” The last month in Ukraine has proven that assumption false. Maybe two months? Time will tell. Poland? With 4 million refugees and another 6 million possible even before the Russians move west. How will they handle that many people? Joe Biden says the USA will take 100 thousand, out of 10 million. Will they examine their commitment to NATO as they shiver in the dark?
Remember war is the sport of kings and all leaders throughout history think of it as a game but at the end of the day there is a mother or a wife who thinks of her dead husband or son and says who could have ever pointed a gun at my sweet man?

Since the S-300 is Russian made, I don’t think it is a good idea showing the destruction of them. Russia is still selling them to potential buyers, therefore, it is not good advertisement to show the destruction of a weapon that you are still selling
