The Russian service member who was killed in central Syria on September 9 has been identified by Russian sources as 45-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Alexei Schneider.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the officer was a part of a Russian Military Police unit that was reconnoitering a path of a humanitarian convoy in the governorate of Homs when it was targeted by a roadside bomb.
The roadside bomb ripped through the officer’s military truck, a KamAZ-5350 with a KDZ MM-501/2 armored cabin. Photos shared by the Military Informant channel on Telegram confirem that the truck was destroyed in the attack.
The truck was equipped with the RP-377VM1 B35169 jamming system, which suggests that the bomb used in the attack was detonated via a wire from a nearby place.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, yet. However, ISIS remains the main suspect. The terrorist group’s cells have been waging an insurgency against Syrian government forces and their allies in the central region for around three years.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out more than 60 airstrikes on ISIS hideouts in central Syria in response to the deadly attack.
Syrian government forces and their allies will likely launch an operation to secure the area where the attack took place in the upcoming few days.
Highly unlikely to be a command-wire detonation as there is no urban refuge anywhere in photos supplied and immediate location offers only the prospect of a suicide mission. Possibly a pressure plate system but the lack of a crater heavily suggests specialised military explosives rather than a mix n match IED or a home made farm chemical substance
Probably an anti tank mine.
Warum fährt da kein Schützenpanzerwagen, sondern ein LKW? SEHR FAHRLÄSSIG… Das sind doch keine Touristen.
RIP Hero. Rest in peace. You will be avanged soon.
That wasn’t an IED, that looks like an anti tank mine.
