On October 19, a Russian military-diplomatic source told the TASS news agency that Russian specialists are converting S-300PM air defense systems, which had been delivered to Syria, into the S-300PMU-2 Favorit version.
“In October, three battalions of S-300PM systems and their ammunition load were delivered to Syria. Later, a regimental command post was brought to the country. All the hardware makes part of the S-300PM equipment set, except for the reconnaissance and air target detection radar of the regiment’s command post, which is part of the S-300PM-2,” the source told TASS.
According to the source, the specialists will change codes and letter frequencies of the ground interrogator and the letter frequencies of the radar for Syrian versions. The specialists work will reportedly end before November.
The S-300PM version uses domestic Russian codes and letter frequencies, which can’t be shared with any other country. However, the S-300PMU-2 Favorit is the export version, which will allow Syria to use its own codes and letter frequencies and integrate the systems into its air defense network.
Russia decided to supply Syria with the S-300 systems following the downing of the Il-20 intelligence plane last month. The step will enhance the capabilities of the Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces (SyAADF) and improve the security of Russian troops deployed in Syria.

46N6E3 with 250km range comes standard with S400 system. No doubt the S300 could be upgraded if Russia desired this.
I dont think the Russians or the Syrians, are stupid enough to give out info as to what system they bring in Syria so dont believe everything you read. That Israel has not initiated a single air strike since Sept. 17 says plenty about the Israeli perspective on likely capabilities of the Russian systems – note that Israel did not strike before S-300 delivery – due to concerns the advanced Russian systems in Syria operated by Russians might be put to use given Shoigu made it clear the deconfliction arrangement was finished.
It seems Israeli air strikes are finished as well and with SAA getting upgrades integrated with state of the art Russian operated systems, I do not see air strikes resuming anytime soon – so report widespread malfunctioning parts problem, ground the fleet that was announced to have the task of taking out the S-300 systems, yes, the F-35, now stop laughing and try to pay attention to hear the great and mighty scary Netayahoo belch:

Creative part of my mind coined alternative theory that the whole story about downing Russian plane is a psy-op, performed together with Israel (and approved by POTUS) – in order to create proper context for Idlib offensive, thus completion of the Syrian war. I came to this idea (that would need further development and research) while imaging how in 10 years would look Wikipedia page about Syrian war – because, downing of the Iljušin will be remembered as historical turn-point that allowed the end-game.

When you inter grade an air defense system it means all batteries act as one and will be used to defend their area of assignment. Why you think every one now avoiding to attack Syria and is no more talk of chemical attacks by SAA and all the BS you been hearing before on daily bases?

The unofficial report 3 weeks ago from a Russian Pilot who leaked fotos taken by him of a USAF F-35 flying over Syria totally spooked the spooks at Langley and in the Pentagon. That foto, alone, taken with the deploying of the S-300 system inside Syria has been enough to stop both the Americans, NATO AND the Israelis in their tracks …….. they are now frozen in time while figuring out how to retreat from their previous position of claiming ownership of the skies over Syria. The entire story has now moved to Deir Ezzor and East of the Euphrates and what I believe is the coming but wholly misconceived War against iran.
From what is said here – I assume this is all about legality of the delivery, as what they did breaks their own legislation on the arms exports, so the “upgrade” team is sent to formally fix the issue before it becomes a political bullet in internal affairs. To conclude: it will become PMU-2 on paper – while in reality: it is what it is, with slight configuration differences.

evrything from their range to their reaction time to the imount of targets tracked to the accuracy. Also usually the statistics you see on a weapons system are based soley on their export model performance (that explains why the T90 model 1993’s in syria withstood TOW-2’s hits and shruged them off like nothing even tho evryone expected them not to).
I just read up on it, and it seems the PMU upgrade allows the S300 to control S200 batteries, which the Syrians still use. As for range, well that depends on the missile, and they both use the same missiles.
So it is actually an upgrade, not a downgrade.

no i mean its a downgrded version of the S-300PM2 the PMU2 is the downgraded export version of the PM2 the PM2’s perfornace is unknown since Russia uses it while the PMU-2 is somewhat known (not exactly tho). The S300 is only compatble with the S-200D the Syrian’s have the S-200VE so idk if its compatable but the S-300 is far superopt to any S-200 variant.

the S-200 dose not have a IFF system at all (well it dose but its from the 1950’s and can easely be fooled so noone uses it anymore) while the S-300 has a built in digital IFF system on both export and Russian models.

Isnt it interesting that as soon as the S-300’s were delivered to Syria, and Russian and Syrian defense systems were centralized and integrated, it was announced by Israel that they would use their F-35’s against them. But the very next day, the U.S. announced the complete grounding of all its F-35’s due to technical issues, and Britain and Israel both followed suit.
They all know that the S-300’s would decimate the F-35’s, especially given that the F-35 ‘s have the hottest, in heat thermal index of any jet in the world. And the F-35’s have only one engine, shrapnel or a direct hit and its all over for the F-35’s.

I believe that instead of concentrating on deployment of S-300 of whatever version at Hmeimim Airbase in far NW Syria you should all carefully read what Shoigu has said and what Syrians have kept their lips sealed on. I believe that S-300 has been deployed in multiple locations across Syria, including everywhere around Damascus and in N-NE Syria thereby providing air-cover and defence against attack from Israeli & US-led Coalition encamped along the Euphrates and providing support to ‘Kurds’ & to IS ……… to be used as Defence against attack by the Syrians but also, to be used as a ‘Deterrent Threat’ against the jangling threats against Iran.
