On October 9, Syrian authorities launched the reconciliation process in the eastern countryside of Dara with support from Russia.

Units of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and a force from the Russian Military Police entered the town of Nassib, where a border crossing with Jordan is located. A reconciliation center was opened in the town under an agreement that was reached earlier this week.

Dozens of gunmen from Nassib and the nearby towns of Om Elmiathin and al-Taebah have already visited the center and handed over their weapons in order to join the reconciliation process. Most of the gunmen were wanted for military service or for deserting the SAA.

The new Russian-sponsored reconciliation process saw much success in Daraa al-Balad, the southern part of Daraa city, as well as in the governorate’s western and northern countryside over the past six weeks.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 5,000 gunmen have joined the process, so far. The gunmen handed over more than 800 weapons.

Despite the success of the news reconciliation process, attacks continue to target Syrian service members in Daraa. On October 6, two police officers were shot and killed in the northern countryside of the governorate. ISIS was likely behind the attack.

In order to secure and stabilize Daraa, the SAA will have to improve coordination with local gunmen. Terrorist groups’ like ISIS represent a threat for both sides.
